"Are Dov Charney and his PR team spending hours online posting to newsgroups, buying Google Ads, and sock-puppeting domain names to smear the L.A. lawyer involved in most of the company's current lawsuits?"
Wouldn't surprise me. I bitched about AA on a friend's blog and in flew a PR bod to "correct me" on a few facts.
@morninggloria: NEW Victoria Secret Bra: It's called the air bra, available for so cheap price of $25. (It's literally just a price tag that says Victoria Secret) Available in clear, nude, and the daring option of see through. Now available at all stores, just make sure to ask your friendly salesperson about this wonderful deal or you just might miss it...completely.
@LaFemme: I was actually thinking along the early Anna Nicole days, myself. It's funny how our first reactions were more along the lines of "emulator/ impersonator" than that of the original.
Maybe Helen's ambassadorial duties will include running around in underwear on the beach, clutching that bag to her breasts while looking back seductively, then almost-sexing against a tree? It might help boost sales. But that's just me.
I am going to say this again: Marilyn Monroe lived a very sad life and died a very sad death. Can we please put an end to this weird starlet fascination with her? There was only one Marilyn, and guess what? You're not her. And you should probably be thankful for that in many, many ways.
@hortense: I can't think of any other person whom so many other people have tried to twinnify themselves with. (Couldn't think of a word; made one up.) It is really creepy, and why can't everyone just admire her work without trying to duplicate it?
@hortense: hortense, thank you so much! I was just channeling a very inarticulate version of precisely what you say here. Looking at old pictures of her actually kind of breaks my heart, because now we know what was going on behind the smile and the hair-do. Better to toil in obscurity than achieve her life and death.
@DangerMouse: Yeah, I don't understand it fully either. I get that she was an icon, but so was my Rita. And Ava Gardner. And Jean Harlow, Katharine Hepburn, Vivien Leigh. They were all gorgeous ladies, so why doesn't anyone recreate their pictures/look?
@hortense: I have to disagree. Marilyn set an aesthetic precedent for all women. There really is no harm in trying to recreate her iconic image, as long as it does not exploit or sensationalize her private hardships.
@hortense: Thank you. No more "last sitting" or "bombshell" photoshoots. Quit with the legging lines. She was unparalleled, and her unfortunate demise is nothing to be "inspired" by. And also? If you love her so much, it's in your best interest to let the woman rest in peace instead of corrupting her name.
@❀❀DoNotStalk❀❀: Rita gets copied from time to time, no? I personally thought Rita and Ava were both sexier (and prettier) than Marilyn, but alas, blondes always get more attention don't they?
@hortense: I agree completely. I always feel a little sad when I see this kind of thing. Monroe was a very sad person, and I feel like even after her death, she isn't allowed to feel like a person. She's not allowed to have been depressed or to have disliked herself, because it means that we can't admire her the same way. Her sadness taints our happiness and therefore, she can't have it. She's an image, an icon and a brand, but never a person.

Alas, that would never, ever work for me. I've tried, and .... no. just no. Too damn painful.

And I would also argue that Marilyn was trapped in that image - it made her famous, but it did not make her happy.
