    I apologize if this seems naive, but the last time I heard "guido" outside of Jersey Shore, someone was proudly declaring themselves thus.

    Therefore, I thought guido was roughly the equivalent of, say, "mick"- once used as an insult, but has lost its sting and is now just outdated. Is this not the case?

    I don't know why, but I find something about this comment HILARIOUS. Like, obviously her soul is still there, she's an angel, right? I feel like it's like saying, "The sky is blue. That's what makes the sky what it is and that's what I love about it."

    I'm surprised that Church scandal is buried in Dirt Bag. I'm with Sinead all the way. Nothing against Catholic layfolks, but the church is a child rape institution. They have no credibility to whine about movies and jewelled crosses.

It was a few years back, but I remember hearing a story on NPR about how Pope Benedict made a statement about how it could have an evil effect on children readers, or some such nonsense, and I nearly passed out from a rage stroke. Of all the countless problems in this sad world, and THIS is what you choose to focus on? Unbelievable.

    @jcb820: @sybann: They do it everywhere. My mom grew up Catholic in India and when she was growing up, all the mothers warned their children to not be alone with certain priests.

    @sybann: when I was a kid in Catholic school, the priests came once a month to give us confession. When we got a new priest in 7th grade, my home room teacher started scheduling quizzes or group presentations on that day, so our classroom was always skipped. I didn't realize until my 30's that she was trying to keep us from going to confession with him.

    @south2nd: Bless her to pieces - we're none of us immune - my mother refused to leave us alone with my paternal great grandfather - based totally on a hinky feeling she got from him. She found out later from my Dad's mom that he wasn't entirely trustworthy around women and girls.

    She told a story about running around a dining table to stay away from his hands.

I think he was just trying to recount an embarrassing childhood anecdote that would also support his rap star/playa image.

    @pestified wants-a-Bush-tribunal: Whoa whoa dr. jump-to-conclusions, slow down. sexual curiosity =/= victim of molestation. you have absolutely no clue whether he or she had any history of sexual abuse and it is really big stretch to assume that childhood sex games are automatically indicative of abuse. we live in a sexually saturated culture and children are curious by nature. it is just as plausible that this was a harmless childhood experiment. maybe there was something nefarious, maybe not. but you do not have any sort of evidence to back up such serious a claim.

    @Helen Valentine: There's actually child on child sex abuse and then childhood sexual experimentation. This doesn't really have to do with anything but both parties were out of the typical age range for childhood sexual experimentation.

    @KATE!: "playing" sex or sexual curiosity is a normal part of childhood sexual development. The thing that confuses/worries me is that both parties were older then the age when this happens. Of course, I don't know the full story here so I can't really say anything else.

    @MargaretMoony: i think that one of the reasons that children are believe to "grow out" of sex play or that sex play is associated with younger children is because they quickly learn (via the reaction of their parents/schoolteachers to such play) that society generally frowns on such displays and that sex is a taboo or for "adults" only. as we become a more sexually liberated culture and have more avenues in which sex is discussed and visible those taboos erode. it seems logical then that prepubescent children may feel less ashamed of their sexual curiosity and exhibit more traditionally "adult" behavior. many social theorists contend that "childhood" as we understand is more dependent on social construction than biological development.

    a lot of our notions about modern childhood date back to the victorian era and are in desperate need of an update.

    i, for one, remember deciding in 5th grade that i was ready to become sexually active and was very excited to get to middle school--which i imagined/fantasized was just an orgy of hedonistic pre-adolescence. that would have put me around 9/10 when i decided i wanted to start experimenting. but because i was abnormally shy, chunky, and bespectacled, it would be a few more years until i actually had any real opportunities. but the desire and willingness was still there. and i was not abused as a child.

    @KATE!: Thank you! Everyone's so quick to categorize this as evidence of abuse of some sort. Is it not at all possible that kids could play sexually and not have it all be a sign of something insidious and damaging? Is it not possible that kids are just being kids?

    I haven't watched Jersey Shore, but when I read that quote from Snookie, I actually HEARD it in a South Jersey "guidette" accent. So hilarious. I can't decide if I want to watch the show or not. Part of me thinks its going to be a hilarious trainwreck, and part of me gets really annoyed with the fact that people think its an appropriate way to act.
    It also annoys me when people explain their behavior by saying "I'm Italian..."

    How are Tiger's mistresses affording Gloria Allred as their attorney? She bares the unlikely distinction of being a well-known lawyer outside of the legal community, and as such, her rates are astronomical. Unless these women are wealthy, I don't understand how they hire her.

    @Tchotchke: I don't know anything about the other women, but I do know that Rachel Uchitel comes from a sleekly wealthy New York family, and likely has considerable financial resources that she can call upon when needed.

    @weese17: I don't think it's need attorneys. I think it's more like, "Drop seven figures into my bank account or I start talking." And having Gloria Allred on their team makes that threat realistic and costly.

    @weese17: I understand and totally share your cynicism. But I also know with grim certainty that if I were publicly implicated in this shitstorm (regardless of whether I wanted the publicity or not), I would be retaining the best lawyer I could afford. The potential for slander and defamation is unthinkably high, and it's understandable to want to protect oneself against that.

    Frankly, I think they'd be foolish not to be getting sound legal advice.
