During Russian peasant days (in linen-farming country near the Volga River, at least), people believed that if you put eyes on something (dolls, for example, which had a myriad of purposes and represented everything from the number of children in a household to its wealth), you would endow it with a soul. So none of the variety of dolls that would be present in a peasant house had any eyes, because if something has a soul then the soul can go bad.
Maybe this is why, despite the gifts this guy bears, it freaks me the freak out. #robots
Obviously I am spending way too much time thinking about potential thesis topics but...isn't it interesting that in the more traditional science fiction you get these societies based on robots, which, as pointed out below are a thin disguise of slaves? So what was going on in the world between I guess - 1930 and 1980 that this longing for a slave society was so acutely expressed in fiction as robots?
In other words, why was I promised as a child that the future would be all robots all the time and they've only got this far? I want my damn robot!
@Hiroine Protagonist: (nice, I'm reading Snow Crash now) Indeed. The word robot even comes from the Czech robota, which means slave or serf laborer. Was it a longing for slavery, or just a belief in the inevitability of technology replacing human labor? This was also around the time that life in the home was rapidly moving from manual labor to appliances like electric washing machines. Maybe people just expected the trend to continue straight to robots that would do all of it. Maybe the trend is going that way... *eyes his Roomba*
Also, damn! I worked in the Robotics Institute last year. I can't believe I missed out on snackbot. #robots
@Hiroine Protagonist: "Robot" is derived from the Czech word for serf labor (robota) & was first used to refer to non-human servants in a 1921 play by Karel Čapek
@katherinesullivan: Really! That is fascinating. It would be really interesting to do a SF survey and note changing attitudes towards robots. Perhaps I should write a proposal...Or research. Yes, first research. #robots
It's pretty cute! I know it's silly of me, but I don't like it when robots are just used in the place of people, because they do not get tired or complain. Robot uprisings, people! Beware of the angry, mistreated robots!
I have a tendency to personify everything, though, so... that might just be me. #robots
@boxspelunker: It's not just you. I tend to personify electronics as well.

@boxspelunker: I've seen the movie Westworld and I'm pretty sure that makes me an expert in robot anger, so I feel comfortable in saying that it's no laughing matter when they get pissed off.
Just what we all need: A smart snack slave able to monitor my every move, record it, and pass that information along. I think I just lost my appetite for donuts. #robots
