If I could achieve the face that Mrs. Obama is making in this picture, I, like Mark Sanford, would die happy. I do not believe I have enough starch in me, though. That Michelle Obama -- she is all kinds of starch and backbone.

What the? Guess what Kurtz, being white also didn't guarantee access to Bush, Clinton, Bush Sr, and so on and so on. Why even point that out?

I think it is notable. Why weren't the black journalists given the opportunity to cover Laura Bush? It also works the other way too. Why aren't the white journalists given the opportunity to cover Michelle? Are their bosses being racist?

@AthertonMerriweather: It's probably notable too because I'm assuming there aren't as many black women reporters as white women reporters. So to have 5 black reporters covering one story is probably not just coincidence.

However, maybe there are more black women in journalism than I am assuming.

@AthertonMerriweather: Having been in the field, I can honestly say a big part of it is convincing editors to give you a chance to cover things things that are outside of the "urban" field. I spent a year trying to pitch a story about Appalachia, which incidentally ended up being assigned to a white reporter from there, for example. The rationale was that he could understand the subjects better. Or relate to them. Bullshit.

Also, breaking into the journalism profession is generally difficult and is insanely difficult as a person of color. Particular if you lack the resources and connections to do the unpaid and lowly paid gigs that represent the first ten years of working in the field. That's why I left.

@AthertonMerriweather: Oh, God! The stories I could tell. The whole evil mix between PR, freebies (which basically subsidize the shitty pay) and people's need to fit a story in one box despite the facts pointing to a different one would make you laugh. Then again, I worked as a lowly EA in a magazine that publishes one, just one, real news feature piece an issue. Not sort of hard hitting kind of place.
