I think Stephenie Meyer's world seems like a magical Mormon fairyland totally untouched by our world. She really is the luckiest motherfucker alive. I wish she had an ounce of self awareness- SM, your books were addictive but not that good. You stumbled across a hole that for some reason, vast numbers of readers need filled, and your books would do. They need to be vastly changed for the screen if they're not to come across as Lifetime movies writ large.

@twinpeaks: I have to agree with you - I think it's really reaching to suggest that there is a malevolent, Mormon undertone to the books. The author captured how many young people feel consumed by their first love, and I think the Twilight backlash is beginning to sound an awful lot like the anti-Harry Potter backlash when those books first came out.

@7states: I don't think there's a malevolent Mormon undertone to the books, but there is definitely a message that the highest goal a woman can achieve is to be married with a baby, forgoing college, a career, etc...and women are passive characters capable of only being acted upon with no agency of their own. However, I am speaking through the lens of my own experience. I am no longer a teenager, and I know that when I was 16 or 17, I would have eaten those books up.

I probably sound like I'm contradicting myself, but I do realize that most teen girls are smarter than we give them credit for...so in summary, if they're reading, and if they're happy with it, then I am ok with that. And leave it to the readers to figure out what message they will take from the books.

at a party of mostly single heterosexual women, when someone told me they used a Rachel Ray recipe to make a (not particularly impressive) dip, i said, "oh, she's annoying! that voice! and when she says 'Yum-o!' i want to shoot myself."

i then realized every ear and eye in the room was turned to me in horror. at least three women said, "i *love* her." as if i was talking about Jesus or Obama.

here's my question: why use a cutesy abbreviation like "E.V.O.O." if, every single time you say it, you follow it with the full "extra virgin olive oil." why bother with the abbreviation? why? why???!?!

@slauza: This sounds about as awkward as when I was out for drinks with some co-workers last week (who are pretty cool and hip), and I made a crack about some not-present third party people were making fun of. I said, "He probably doesn't believe in evolution". And then my one co-worker (who I do know is a Republican, but is fairly unobnoxious for one, said, "Hey-- what's wrong with that? I don't believe in evolution." And he wasn't kidding! Awkward!

@saltine: wimps, pussies, whiners, et al - are you just taking offense to the long-standing term which also doubles for female genetalia?

I'd love to be able to punch people who get away with saying and doing anything, attacking others verbally or otherwise, whilst drunk or sober because this is a generation where NOBODY realize there are consequences to their actions because, typically, there aren't.

It used to work wonders when I beat the shit out of someone, girl or guy, if they popped off and got in my face about something. Alas, I'm over the age of 18 (as in I'm 40) and to do that would be deemed immature or some such bullshit.

I could go on and on about what a good beat down, grown up to grown up could do for future relations. I don't see anything wrong with violence as a last resort. (and violence that runs very very short of maiming or killing)

@Scout: ...and please don't try and make any correlation to the VERY serious domestic abuse because this is NOT to that which I am speaking.

Think: subduing some annoying drunk chick who won't get out of your face, not necessarily hitting her but perhaps pinning her arms behind her back and dragging her out of the club/bar

even better (and something which I do in my old age) is to allow the other person to hit and/or scratch you thus leaving a mark visible, call the cops and because of the law, they get taken away to jail and need to bail themselves out for an average of $1,000
