Maybe I am alone, but I think the across-the-forehead headbands are quite cute.

I am not known for my excellent taste in clothes, though. My mom threatens me with What Not to Wear frequently. So, maybe what I like isn't the best litmus test. #freepeople

@boxspelunker: Hee hee! I wish my family would nominate me for that, just for the $5000 wardrobe. They can urge people to buy certain things, but they do get to go shopping on their own.

@Hana Maru: Oh, I can't even watch it! It makes me nervous. I also feel like they dress everyone almost the same, but that might just be my paranoia. I don't want to be feminine in my dress. I don't want to accentuate my "figure". I just want to be comfortable, and polyester doesn't fit into that equation, because my body chemistry reacts badly with it and I am a stinky person. Moreso than usual. Like... overwhelming. D: #freepeople

@boxspelunker: They do dress everyone the same! in colored low heels, knee-length printed dresses, and "structured" jackets. They also try to break women down with the mirrored closet of shame. I hate that. Queer Eye is no longer on, but I always liked Carson's approach. He was actually creative, and took each guy's personal taste into account.

I haven't watched WNTW in a while, but I always cheered for the people who refused to succumb to the pressure, like one woman who spent $1000 on a great pair of cowboy boots that she really loved, but was warned against. I just fantasize that someone will nominate me so I can pretend to go along with Stacy and Clinton, then buy an expensive new wardrobe and tell them to fuck off. #freepeople

@Hana Maru: I thought so! Every time, I see wrap dresses, dark-wash jeans (generally with a boot cut or straight leg), and bright heels. I figured it was just the episodes I was catching.

My favorite rebel was the little hippie woman who knit sweaters from hair she'd collected from various pets - her friend had a rabbit and she'd spun its leftover fur into yarn and made a really cute sweater. I thought that was unique and great, but Stacy and Clinton were grossed out :D

I will nominate you, and you can dress like a lump for a few weeks, and then dazzle everyone! #freepeople

@boxspelunker: I love the idea od saving rabbit fur or dog fur and knitting sweaters out of it. I bet they're really soft. It's not like you can't clean them and house pets are probably cleaner than farmed wool animals, anyway. Of course Stacy and Clinton were grossed out. I bet they wanted to replace it with printed wrap dresses and colorful pointy heels. #freepeople

@Hana Maru: She convinced them to let her keep the clothes that she had made out of animals that she knew the names of. So she kept a few sweaters, scarves, things like that, I think. She had an amazing collection of clothes, from traveling and gifts from around the world. They were just like, "Does every piece have a story? Le sigh..." and she was telling them about this time in Tibet when she was living with this family... I totally raged about that show afterwards. D:

Have you ever seen the follow-up shows? Most of the people don't keep doing what they are told to do. They revert to what they like. Guess you really can't account for taste!

@boxspelunker: I've never seen a follow up. I guess all that shaming doesn't work so much as it's good for tv? Not every woman needs to be into her appearance. The show seems to verge on self-parody sometimes, like when they're haranguing a PhD candidate to show off her legs.

I have a bunch of junk from my travels that I cherish, including clothes that will probably never fit again and were cheap to begin with. I'd hate to have to sputter inarticulately in defense of keeping them.

BTW, I love that the new comment notification lets us continue conversations like this one!

@Hana Maru: I think people like to have their own personal style, even if no one else likes it. Also, instead of doing thousands of dollars worth of clothing, wouldn't it be better to show people how to be more "stylish" on a budget? I mean, most people can't afford shirts that cost hundreds of dollars, and so they'll never buy one again, you know? So if the hundreds-of-dollars shirt gets stained or torn, then that's that! I just think WNTW sets up a weird structure that can't be sustained, because lots of people they make over don't live in NY, where they're taken shopping, or shown how to turn their personal style into something more appropriate for work.

Oh, yeah, I've seen episodes like that - a woman who worked construction, and she was encouraged to "look more like a girl" while on the job. It's like... no? She should dress however is comfortable and safe for her? They weren't pushing heels on her or anything, but it was weird to watch.

Yeah, I have some weird stuff from traveling, eBay, or gifts that you know, I just want to keep it, and I don't care if I'm stylish! Dressing yourself is never just about how you look, it's about how you feel, too. If that ratty old sweatshirt makes you feel relaxed and comfortable, there is no reason not to wear it when you're at home, you know? It probably shouldn't be subbed in as professional wear, but so many of us dress in a way that makes us happy, even if we don't look "our best".

Then head to Patel Brothers for the best Indian grocery shopping eva.

And wrap it all up with a henna tattoo! I'm getting myself a HT to freak out my family at Thanksgiving. It's going to be kick-ass.

As a poor hippie myself, I would rather buy my poor hippie clothes from thrift stores (or ask my mother to knit them for me) than wear the FP or Urban Outfitters versions, which uniformly tend to have super wacky proportions, are often made of super flimsy fabrics, and are ridiculously expensive. Once in a while I'll pick up a t-shirt or non crazy dress (if they're ridiculously on sale) or a hat (I will freely admit that UO's hats are the stuff of my dreams).

But really, I'd rather preserve my poor hippie (student) savings for 1) a grad school degree in the humanities and 2) flights to cool places where I can work with people who might actually be doing something to change the world. Oh, and 3) a suit so I can find a real person job someday (haha). #freepeople

Honestly...I like a lot of Free People's stuff. Not necessarily THIS stuff, and the pricing is just absurd...but I'm a sucker for hippie crap. I want to have hugely wavy hair. I want to look like the sun shines exclusively on my head alone. I want to be able to play every CSNY song on guitar, and I want to look like I live on a diet of honeycomb and flaxseed flatbread, and all this includes granny squares and a wardrobe that screams "garden pauper." It doesn't seem as cool now that I'm seeing it in print... #freepeople

I have a couple FP pieces that I've purchased at Loehmann's, for much less than they sell in the catalog. They do make some cute sweaters, it seems they seriously need to find a new catalog director and re think their marketing strategy. #freepeople

@buymecandy: They might also rethink their sizing. I am on the average side of average, and I can't get my torso into their XL. I automatically avoid brands that refuse to make their clothing in sizes that make sense. And by "make sense," I mean apply to more than 10 percent of people.

Double the boycott for companies that charge three digits for questionable quality. This stuff looks great in the photos, but without the benefit of a lighting crew and an imaginative art director, this is C grade. #freepeople

@kelly_kapowski: I rocked the hippie look in high school in the mid-90s, and I had to work hard at it! I had to go through my parents' attic, my granparents' attic, and trudge through piles of clothing at stores looking for that one piece that, if appropriately accesorized, would give off that hippie vibe! I bought a shirt some hippie made in the parking lot at the Furthur Festival! I mourned the shirt my mom lost when someone broke into her VW Bus and stole everything in 1973. Oh, the things I could have done with that shirt! And these kids today, they can just go onto their little internet, hop onto free people's website, or visit a Lucky Brand store, and it's all there in front of them. Kids today, they don't have to work for their style. It pisses me off. Now get off my lawn. #freepeople
