Jezebel, quit making me cry like a little baby girl with these heartstring-tugging stories. First the dog in the car accident and now this lovely child who gives me hope for humankind? My mascara is nothing but southbound sludge at this point.

A smart, dedicated, athletic, well-spoken, all-around awesome teenage girl? Unfortunately we don't see too many of those these days. All we get are stories abut sexting and "16 and Pregnant". Gives me a little more hope for the future.

This article reminded me of the post about women's sports yesterday. As mentioned in that post, more money is now spent on girls sports than boys sports. I think a big part of that is the sometimes huge cost of "girl-centric" sports like gymnastics, cheerleading and horseback riding. That's not to say that those sports aren't awesome, but they are expensive. I think it's great that a smart, focused girl like Alexis who has goals both achievable (college) and lofty (Olympics) is getting some of the financial backing she needs to continue in her sport, despite her family's setbacks. I also think it's great that she has an obviously dedicated mother and supporters who are helping her along the way.

i grew up in the states, but moved back to méxico 10 years ago and haven't been able to go back ever since, and one of the things i miss the most is being able to go to a barnes and noble, grab a book and read peacefully for hours.

The Barnes and Noble comment actually makes me a little sad. Awesome that it's a bookstore. More awesome if it had been an independent one. Barnes and Noble is taking over the world in a horrible way.

@laureltreedaphne: I've never understood this sentiment. I've shopped and worked at both independent and chain bookstores, and the independent bookstores did not, as a whole, treat their employees any better, provide better pay or benefits, have better customer service, or offer a better or more diverse selection of books than the chain stores. Why do people believe that independent bookstores are automatically better than chain bookstores?

@laureltreedaphne: The more I reflect on this comment, the more it annoys me. This girl is a poor, black kid making huge sacrifices to succeed in a sport where poor, black kids don't really succeed. And she expresses a love for books, which she fulfills at a bookstore, and you're concerned because it's not an independent store? Really? A little perspective would be just fantastic here.
