There is a fabu recipe up in the U.P. for whitefish spread. It's basically smoked whitefish, cream cheese and mayo (as needed.) Spread on Triscuits. OMG, you will wish you were Finnish.
Sadie, is this a frequent-whine-answered? Because if Jezebel Sauce isn't an awesome entree into more frequent cooking posts, I don't know what would be better, and I love y'all for it!
Another staple of Midwestern sleepovers and church youth group parties is "pizza dip", which is... surprisingly FUCKING AWESOME. It's layers of cream cheese, pizza sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni, usually served in a flat shallow dish and ringed with crackers.
@tscheese: Thanks, tscheese! I HAVE to make that dip. I don't care that I don't have an occasion, I'm just going to make it for dinner for me and the husband.
Here in TX we do chili cheese cream cheese. Yes, that's a brick of cream cheese topped with chili and then topped with cheddar cheese. You eat it with fritos (must be fritos).
I've been known to spread cream cheese on rykrisps and spoon cherry preserves on top, so this Jezzy sauce sounds right up my alley.
@prestocaro: Oh GOD yes. Though as a veggie, now I do Hormel veggie chili instead of Wolf Brand Chili No Beans (its proper name). Man, I miss Frito Pies.
@hellodarling!: that's what I was going to say: I've seen this as chili cream cheese dip, not in a sweet variety. But cream cheese is a miracle ingredient. Fantastic in pastry shells for mini quiches.
@hellodarling!: Oh. I am so sad for your tastebuds, but impressed and happy for whatever else it is that being a veggie does for you.
But no Wolf Brand Chili No Beans (check, total agreement)? I just hadn't thought... never conceptualized a world without it. (Don't you love when you hear of people online trying to eat it like a bowl of chili, and being all "really? this is it?!" and you can smugly go, duh, it's a condiment, not a meal.)
@hellodarling!: But frito pies with veggie chili is just as good! My pops couldn't eat meat for a while and we'd use the morningstar crumbles and chili seasoning to make frito pies. works out OK, especially if you haven't had meaty chili in a while. I congratulate you on your fortitude. I wouldn't make it a day!
@BrutallyHonestBabes: Oh, loin of McAvoy. I've seriously cut down on my McAvoy intake, but it takes only the slightest mention to send me back over the edge.
I think I foresee a Friday night lineup of wine, cheese and Atonement.
That's not Jezebel Sauce. There is a pronounced lack of minced fetus or candied fetus morsels in that recipe, absolutely required for any dish to be predicated by "Jezebel."
I totally remember seeing this recipe in an old cooking magazine my mom had, accompanied by a Victorian drawing of a vixenish lady with a corset and flowing hair.
@bananastand: One of my treasured possessions is my great-grandmother's community cookbook from South Dakota in the 1930s and this recipe looks EXACTLY like something that would be featured there.
@tscheese: Our mutual love of food and South Dakota community cookbooks leads me to ask this burning question: are you my twin? I can be the evil twin, if need be.
Sounds great. Maybe it's coming from the Midwest or growing up with Nordic peoples, but jelly on a brick of cream cheese is a traditional snack in my folks (and grandfolks) house. I know, appetizing FAIL. But it's good. I promise.
I'm not sure what should really be in the Jezebel Sauce (although morninggloria's is probably closest), but I do know that the recipe should be written in such a fashion that you can plausibly add "....in my pants" to the end of each direction.
