Just FYI, Retin-A at night followed by a baking soda wash in the morning can really help exfoliate the shed skin off. Just be careful not to rub too hard because it can tear off the more sensitive little zits.
@mllej: I wash my face with dove soap, then slap some baking soda on both cheeks and add a little water. It's basically like making a scrub, but the baking soda doesn't dry me out as much as marketed exfoliates do.
Having tried everything (Sprio, Minocycline, Tetracycline, Dua, Benzaclin, Clindamycin, Benzamycin, Differin, Triaz, Retin-A, and probably others I can't even remember now) I am on Tazorac. My face is a fucking mess, but hey, maybe it will improve after it finishing flaking off and exploding with acne? Nothing else has ever made any difference, so I am hoping this works. If not, I am doing a round of Acutane. I am 24 and don't want to deal with acne anymore. I am so, so over it.
@LaFemme: It's worth getting that checked out if you're in your 20s. Turns out this was the main factor to my cystic acne and if untreated PCOS can lead to infertility problems later on.
@LaFemme: I use Tazorac and it's finally doing the trick. I've been prescribed tons of things, but I have sensitive skin and Duac and Retin-A were too unstable and would make me break out into rashes of tiny zits. Tazorac is NO JOKE, but it works really well. It makes your skin flake in the beginning, but I've stuck with it and I'm happy with the results.
@mllej: Shit. Does it have to be cystic acne? Mine isn't so so bad, but occasionally the zits can be deep and painful. I have always thought maybe it was the beginnings of roseacea, because my mom has that, but I still am not quite sure if that's it because I don't think I have the right skin type for roseacea. And I am in my mid-20s as well, and sick and tired of looking like a 14 year old.
Anywho. Maybe I will google this PCOS you speak of.
@Schmalerie: Your skin sounds just like mine, down to the mom with rosacea too. I occasionally get a true cystic zit (Tazorac has given me more actually) but in general I just have more regular ones, that could be popped... We should look into this PCOS.
Retin-A only works for me if my zits stop popping up. I also use spironolactone, which helps a lot (I have hormonal acne), but it still hasn't done the job. I am giving it another month and then I am going to the dermatologist. I am 26 and sick of this shit.
@saintbernadette: Ain't it just great? And both of my parents have always had adult acne, and still do even in their late 40s, so I know this shit isn't going away anytime soon. Sigh.
@schlegs84: Be forewarned - it will get worse for a couple weeks before it gets better. Don't let it deter you, because I think that's what turns a lot of people off. If you just keep at it, within a few weeks you'll be glad you did.
@Schmalerie: yeah, same boat here. My acne isnt terrible terrible, more like 3-5 zits on my face at all time, but it scars, and both my parents have acne in their 50s. So... I really want to get rid of it, even if Acutane seems extreme to some people, I don't want to have my face be covered in pock-marks by 30.
Oh, god, I hate when corporate America takes advantage of teens and children for its own benefit. These poor kids will be tortured by their peers for all eternity.
@tomatoheart: I'm glad the Obama administration recognizes my complete aversion to having babies before I'm 30. Another bonus of birth control: I'm constantly glowing (contained acne + sex = beautiful skin)!

And thank goodness Obama saw fit to bring back preferential pricing. Nuva ring is shaped like an "O" for a reason now :)
