There is a real sense, among the millionaires' club of the Senate, as well as those in the media (not Latoya!) who reproduce the 'debate' there as the limits of the actual, real, discussion and debate on health care, that the health and medical choices of (especially) poor, disenfranchised, and oppressed sectors of society are constantly open to question and scrutiny.
This is an issue about people's LIVES, and particularly in this case about women's lives.
HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT. That's it, full stop, and whether you, Mr. Senator want an abortion or whatever you think of "those women" and whatever your religion is or your distaste for "the obese" or WHATEVER, public health care is NOT PERSONAL CHARITY, it is a HUMAN RIGHT.
The promoters of Nelson/Stupak/Pitts, the engineers of the horrendous attack on Native women's rights, those who exposit about the 'health costs' of 'the obese' who 'don't take personal responsibility,' et. al. view health care as their own personal charity, and its recipients as some kind of indentured servants.
It's like the right to vote, or any other human right. It's a right that's being denied to millions, and the answer is to stop those who are denying millions their human rights and hold them accountable, not cater to their whims and pretend that those who have created this monstrous health care system are somehow a solution to the problem.
I remember marching back in middle and high school, in the Clinton years, no more layer by layer, we want single payer! It's long past time.
I only know one openly anti-choice person and he constantly forwards emails about this crap. He strikes me as being against abortion because he can't understand why women wouldn't want to have his babies.
You know, I think I have to stop reading these political articles on Jezebel. It's not that they aren't brilliant (LaToya, you are the 8th wonder of the world) but they depress the shit out of me. It's becoming more and more clear to me that no matter how hard we fight, we're going to lose to those with money and the misplaced belief that God is on their side. (And, considering these assholes are always Republicans who are proud to call themselves "the Party of Lincoln", you'd think that they would remember Lincoln's Second Inaugural when he basically stated that God doesn't choose sides.)
I cannot believe that in 2009 abortion and reproductive rights are an issue in this country. This issue has been settled in the majority of European countries and they're still standing. In fact, they're doing better than we are in almost every area imaginable. Why can't the right realize that this is a personal decision and if they don't want an abortion or to take birth control that they don't have to? I respect them enough to allow them to continue to make their own choices regarding their reproduction (yes, I even respect the Duggars decision to have that many kids), why can't they respect me enough to allow me to make my own choice?
For as long as women have been getting pregnant, people have been trying to terminate unwanted pregnancies. They've been using birth control since before Jesus. WHY THE HELL IS THIS STILL AN ISSUE?
Ugh. Sorry. Just really disheartened and feeling defeated.
I can't handle this anymore. I had no delusions, but I'm so disappointed in Obama, the Dems in the House and Senate, even the liberal voters that seem to be asleep and uninterested about this and several other very important issues. To top it all off, my kitty cat is really starting to tick me off. She refuses to give me comfort and aid in these times of strife! Everything is always, always about her and what she wants Come to think of it, she must be a Republican! (bad kitty)
I don’t understand why, over time, anti-choice legislators have been allowed to claim the moral high ground. Shouldn’t provide health care for everyone be the moral high ground? They are willing to hold up a bill because of their own selfish desires. How is the Hyde amendment not good enough for these people? I’m incensed that if I don’t cede my rights then I’m selfishly blocking health care reform. But we can’t ask them to compromise their beliefs because that would be wrong.
I just want to go outside and scream. Perhaps we should all emulate that classic movie ‘Network,’ and open our windows and scream "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
@likepenguins: Mine too. The Very Necessary album was the first cassette tape I ever bought, when I was like 9. I remember the PSA for AIDS...way ahead of their time.
@Benevolent_Dictatrix (patently absurd): no kidding. Not to mention that they and TLC did more to promote safe sex than the Surgeon General did in the 80s and 90s.
So can we just go ahead and start our own private insurance plan that covers birth control, pregnancy, and abortion? Please? There has to be someone out there with the resources and interest to do this. I can think of a bunch of people who would buy in to it....
@cherry_blossom: They only reason that people would buy into it is if they planned on using it. Pregnancy care, birth care, and abortion services are super expensive, and the plan would be insolvent within months.
As much as you guys hate on California (look, I'm SORRY about Prop 8!) I am still super proud to be from the only state in the union with two female senators.
@DutchessOfDork: Ack, sorry. California was the first, and when I was a kid learning about it, was the only state. It looks like Collins assumed office four years after Boxer.
Regardless, it is a nice thing to have women in the senate.
@Norton: Hey, WA has 2 female senators AND a female governor, AND we are the first state to have passed a referendum in favor of equal rights (well, "everything but marriage" - we're not perfect) for gay couples.
I think it is time for all of us to accept that the only people that matter to Congress are the filthy rich and the billion dollar corporations. It seems like all of the marching, and the donating, and the letter writing is all for nothing. I don't believe it is that the Dems are "spineless", it's just that they use their spines to stand up for their corporate overlords. There's a few out there that really look out for us (Franken, Sanders, and Grayson come to mind) but most everyone else has been bought and paid for.
I almost went apoplectic when I told my mom (who was on the pill way back in the early 70s) that I thought it was absurd that some insurance would cover Viagra but not birth control. My mom said "but Viagra treats a disease, and birth control is a lifestyle issue." Okay, never mind that I took hormonal birth control for years before I had sex, to regulate periods - she was in one of the first cohorts of women to rely on the pill!
@Flackette Goes Retro: I understand that a little bit. If you are using birth control solely as a contraceptive, there are other options available, whereas ed can be argued to have a significant negative affect on your quality of life by preventing you from being intimate with a partner.
Obviously the quality of life thing is also important for my many friends who went on birth control years before they were sexually active for the same reason as you though. Or women with PCOS. Or women whose abusive partners would never use condoms. And so on.
@Flackette Goes Retro: And, let's be honest about the Viagra issue. There are a crapload of men out there taking Viagra who do not need it in any way, shape, or form. There is no test they give you to determine if you need it, there is nothing beyond you asking for it and the doctor checking to make sure you aren't on anything that would interact with it. I hate that people are/pretend to be so naive.
@cherry_blossom: Well men know what's best for them, so they don't need strangers questioning their motives and symptoms when we should just let them decide what they do with their own bodies, whereas women know that men know what's best for women.
@Flackette Goes Retro: I take hormonal bc because I have PCOS and otherwise I would never have a period, and build up ovarian cysts like crazy. When I tried to have the Rx filled the first time years ago, my insurance company threw a fit. I had to review my "case" with someone in the Phillipines over the phone before they would cover the pills. I'm still irate that a strange man in another country had to decide if it was ok for me to take BC, but this same insurance company fully covers Viagra, Cialis, et al with no questions asked.
@Norton: Lack of access to birth control can affect a woman's quality of life by preventing her from being intimate with a partner too. There are other bc options besides the pill, like IUDs and condomns, but there are other ED options besides Viagra, like penis pumps. But men aren't forced to justify their choices like women are. And if avoiding pregnancy, which always carries a risk of maternal death, isn't a health issue, I don't know what is.
Hopefully, the Dems will finally Push It. Whatta Man would think we can disregard reproductive choice in this discussion? Let's Talk About Sex and its consequences.
As I recall, didn't Salt 'n Pepa reunite recently, and after everybody made a big investment, it turned out one of them had become a super-Christian and wouldn't perform the group's standards because they clashed with her new-found Bibleness?
