I can certainly attest to this - novocaine is USELESS on me! I am askeered of the dentist because of it. When I was a preteen and the smartass teeth were coming in my dentist used scissors to cut inflamed gum away from the emerging offending molars (since surgically yanked under general anesthesia - the only way I want a guy's hands in my freakin mouf). I was TWELVE and he had to put his knee on my chest to keep me in the chair. No sh*t.
I have red hair and various issues with anesthesia too. Does it also extend to skin and drug sensitivity? Because I get a rash from everything (I get a rash from anesthesia too). And whenever I take otc meds, I always have to take half the dose or follow childrens directions. Otherwise I have bad reactions.
When I think of my redheaded brother, the three things that come to mind are "sensitive," "pain wuss," and "genetic mutation." (The color in this photo has in no way been altered: his hair is THAT red.)
Genetic mutations impact the metabolism of a lot of drugs. They are using genetic testing now to determine how much blood thinner to give stroke patients after surgery. This is really an incredible next step in medicine.
I not only LOVE spicy food but I love getting tattoos, being bitten, spanked and rough-housed.
I'm a natural redhead through and through of Scottish and Mexican ancestry.
Also, while I loathe the dentist, I've never had issues with pain anymore than the next person.
Perhaps there is something to be said about the origin of ones red hair as in what genetic pool does it come from?
I know a lot pale skinned natural blondes who are ridiculously sensitive to EVERYTHING
Perhaps being a "mutt" makes me more immune to the pain ??
@FamousMockingbird: I'm going to ask al l the red heads I know if they like spicy food. When I think about it I can't think of one who does. Interesting!
@FamousMockingbird: One redhead here: siign me up for your anecdata. I'll eat mild salsa or chili, or weak Thai / Indian food, but keep that dang Tabasco far, FAR away from me.
Seriously? All this time, my resistance to Novocaine was my HAIR's fault!?
And, generally, I have a high pain tolerance for internal pain (broken bones, crazy surgical shit, etc.), but anything external just kills me. Hitting my knee or elbow on a hard surface causes watching-Schindler's-List-level crying from me. And getting stitches removed is the worst. The people who say it doesn't hurt sit on a throne of lies.
Hmmmm . . . I'm a redhead, but have fairly high pain tolerance. But that's probably just because I've had so many migraines that I've gotten accustomed to it.
@Anna N.: Oh, god, my skin is the most sensitive in the world. It drives my mother crazy, she loves to knit and I can't stand anything with loose fibers. I also bruise and get scratched up incredibly easily. And any form of adhesive on my skin drives me crazy, even bandaids.
This explains so much about me. I have such a low threshold for pain tolerance. I also happen to be an huge klutz. So really, I'm in pain a lot.
But I don't avoid the dentist. I'm always there for my six month checkups, no delays. Although I did tell my dentist I refused to see his daughter, who works with him, ever again. She was so harsh on gums and teeth I bled profusely and then she blamed me for it (inconsistency on flossing was her excuse, but I've never been consistent and this was the first time I'd ever bled this much. And guess, what, it's never happened since.)
@EkaterinaBallerina: I once had a dental hygienist use the scrapey hook thing to (I guess) get all the gum tissue out from between my teeth. When you're having actual TISSUE wiped on the bib thingy, the hygienist officially sucks. Fortunately, this dentist retired soon afterward and referred me to his son-in-law who was the best dentist I ever had.

@wednesdayam: The article actually said that brunettes can have the genetic mutation as well, although it was not as common in brunettes as in redheads. I'd be interested in knowing if brunettes with red highlights, or freckles, are more likely to have the mutation.
DON'T call redheads "Carrots." Besides, it's more of an auburn than red.
I still have both double VHS copies of the Anne of Green Gables series. Perhaps I'll watch them today.
@ginseng_you_sing: I rewatched all three mini-series a couple of weeks ago. I have been daydreaming about Gilbert Blythe and his pronounciation of "sorry" every since.
I learned this from my ex-dentist, and I think now it must be the once piece of science that he actually knew because when I switched dentists, the new guy looked in my mouth and chuckled "Man, who in here last?"
Ex-dentist shared this fact with me as he was happily drilling away on one of my 58 cavities, because I kept flinching at the pain. I guess I should have been flattered that he thought my hair was naturally red.
