    My vote for Cao was my first vote for a Republican ever. I like him but the poor guy doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting reelected unless he switches parties or does something amazing in the next 2 years.

    @NefariousNewt: I'm hoping for both.


    He made it as far as he did because of the strong backing of Republicans here who were eager to get anyone but Dolla Bill elected, combined with the support of progressives like me with a similar goal. This was buoyed by an extremely low turnout due to a pushed back election because of Hurricane Gustav. He also won on a shoestring margin due to the small part of the district that is located in the suburbs. Essentially, he had a lot of luck on his side.


    The heavily Democratic city will not turn out for a Republican again regardless of what he accomplishes. Sad, but true.

    @sportz.star: um ya immigrants dont steal jobs from Americans. If you need someone to blame - blame corporations who have driven wages so low and who constantly skirt the law in order to employ illegal immigrants because Americans cannot live on such wages.

    I like talking about recession spending. I have an anecdote to share. I am in the process of buying a car. (Mine was pronounced dead a couple weeks ago.) So I was thinking, man this will be easy. People are DYING to sell shit off their lots. But online I was only seeing some good interest rate deals, not really many cashback incentives.


    But! I was looking at a car last night and I just kept saying no no no and they kept lowering the price AND offering cash incentives. And that was at a Nissan dealership!! which is, you know, sucking *less* wind than everyone else. And it was a little tiny car, not even an SUV or anything. I'm looking at a Ford this afternoon. :D

    @Political Party Girl: @marviehead: @Yitzhak: thanks everyone, i wrote a reply but i think jezebel ate it. yeah I'm probably thinking the Nissan, because my old car was a Nissan. It had 13 years, 165,000 miles, 4 owners and nothing really went horribly wrong until the bitter end. RIP :( I've heard mostly good things about the newer Focuses, so I'm going to check it out, but then again it's still pretty new so it's harder to see what the long term problems will be.

    I really can't get past a magazine paying $300,000 for pictures of this child. Or really, for pictures of any child. (Though I know movie star spawn exclusive pics run at 10x that fee.) Maybe I should see if any magazines will run photos of my kid. I'll start bidding at $9,999. I'll need it to make up for the pay cut I have to take since I'll only be working 3 days a week for the forseeable future.

    @sarah.of.a.lesser.god (and the ovumlord of the rings): It's that hyper-yuppie name. They can't wait to put it on their covers. In truth, he'll look like a baby, and it'll tug at my heart to think of how perfect he is before he realizes what family he's landed in.


    I can just imagine Bristol seeing "Bret Easton Ellis" on a book cover (website? bridge overpass?) and thinking to herself that it has a nice ring to it. That's what I hear with this Tripp Easton Mitchell business.
