The only thing that could make the Obamas' statement to Fallon better would be the addition of the word "douchebag," for example, ""Didn't you get the memo, douchebag?" or "Douchebag, this is a Bar-B-Q." or perhaps "Maybe loosen your tie. You look like you're a douchebag."

why did both Diana Ross and Elizabeth Taylor feel the need to repeatedly say "the Staples Center" when they could have easily said "his memorial"? don't know why this irks me so much, but it just feels like cheap product placement.

The cost of MJ's memorial kind of angers me. A lot. I teach in LA, and there have been literally THOUSANDS of teachers laid off for the upcoming schoolyear because we're sooo broke. I read today that this memorial costs Los Angeles the equivalent of 80 LAUSD annual teachers' salaries. That is fucked on every level.

@emily.jayne: I was trying to withhold some judgment on the situation until I heard whether or not those costs had been covered or would be reimbursed by the family or the organizers,but the fact that the mayor is soliciting donations is not good. Not good at all.

I just hope the fans who came into town for this spent a LOT of money. Like, astronomical sums.

@emily.jayne: I think the city of LA is getting much more back in tax revenue from the fans who bought souvenirs, ate in local restaurants and stayed in local hotels. I live in a small college town with a popular football program and it's estimated that one football weekend alone brings in $12 million in revenue to the city. By comparison, I'm sure LA got millions more than that this week.

Not to denigrate what's going on in California, but I don't think the memorial is making the state's financial situation worse than it already is.

I wrote this elsewhere but seeing his memorial, the tributes and the outpouring of love almost angers me because Michael stated in interview after interview how alone he was felt and how he cried at night from loneliness and how he barely had any friends as it felt like people were always using him and he couldn't trust anyone. In the last couple of decades with the bad publicity and all, you just know this outpouring of love, support and recognition of his talent would have made all the difference had he heard this while he was still alive. He pretty much had to become a recluse to get away from the negative attention and frenzy.

The media/tabloids/public was just so brutal, they didn't even try to be objective even when there was evidence to the contrary. Once he was painted as a freak, they never looked back. What's the moral story here? Among other things, if you love someone/respect tell them now not after they've passed.

@Eric Northman is mine: I agree. I caught some of the memorial while at the gym and I couldn't help but think how nice it would have been to do this for him while he was alive. I truly hope he could see it from wherever he is now.

@Eric Northman is mine: This memorial strikes me as more of that tragic phenomenon you describe. Were the people at the memorial his true friends and worthy of his trust? Or were they looking to capitalize on his death by slipping into his (final) spotlight? I'm guessing most fall into the latter category.

Obama & Michelle are totally the head cheerleader and football captain. And Fallon was obviously a geek in high school. I wonder if the sound of their mocking laughter hurtled him back to those lonely, yearning years. And to that terrible day he spent hours trying on different outfits before working up the courage to ask the Homecoming Queen & King to sign his yearbook, only to have them make fun of his shoes.

@Porcelina: Some do ... I just don't get why she has to brag about it. Especially given that there are any number of women out there struggling with eating disorders that are triggered by pop culture - I don't know. It just always seems so tone deaf. Even if you do, why brag about it like that?

@solidbrassfasteners: I think statements like these are actually misguided attempts to thwart unhealthy eating habits. They don't want to talk about 500 calorie a day diets and 3-hour exercise sessions cause they know that will only feed into the disordered eating that some of their fans may have.

It's definitely a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

@Porcelina: I know, on some pretty decent authority, that Blake Lively really struggles with diet and public body image, and it makes me sad and angry that people actually ask her things that would prompt her to talk about what she eats prior to wearing certain outfits. Just fucking stop it already (not you guys, Mainstream Media and whatnot). I realize that I'm preaching to the choir.

About the only thing that has made any sense to me at all surrounding the entire Michael Jackson story is that his grave will be undisclosed. Let the man have some peace. He was, at the end of the day, a human. Flawed, brilliant, whatever, peace wouldn't be misplaced at this point.

And thank you, President Obama. Your comment is the second thing that has made any sense.

I would imagine that it would turn into quite a tourist destination (all I can picture is Jim Morrison's grave) and not only cause problems for the cemetery itself, but for the Jackson family and the families of any others who would be buried in proximity.

@lalaland13: On NPR this week, I heard Linda Greenhouse, who has covered the LA courts and Jackson in particular for the AP for years, talk about how well behaved the Jackson children are. They speak several languages, they're polite to elders and she said by all accounts they're very good kids. So he must have done right by them.

Maybe some people won't like it, but I love that comment from Obama, as well as the one from Dirt Bag this morning. I'm glad he didn't feel the need to give some elegant eulogy for Michael Jackson. I find it pretty sad that he would be questioned about MJ.

Again: I want him not to care. If Obama were busy worrying about peoples' grief over Jackson, then it'd be taking time away from him dealing with things like nuclear war, a healthcare crisis, and a collapsing global economy. The only thing that would make me happier than him brushing off an MJ question would be him never being asked in the first place.
