Can anyone help me understand? I recall her being considered one of the more hawkish democratic candidates-- or, at least, being described that way by the media. Is this true? Or was that the media being put off by a strong woman? Besides her position on women's issues (yes!) will she be less of an aggressor than condi? I understand Hils is super pro-israel.

@raysanni: Obama was the one who framed her as being a hawk, based on her vote to give war powers to Bush, as he tried to position himself as having always bravely opposed the war. However, she explained why she did, based on bad intelligence from the White House, much hay was made of her not apologizing, as Edwards did. Only Senators Wellstone(R.I.P) and Feingold voted against the war. Obama was in the state senate at the time, on record then as saying that he didn't know how he would vote. In the U.S. Senate he went along with his peers, voting always to fund the war. Obama is super pro-Israel, BTW.

@HanaMaru: No. Her stated foreign policy positions were SUPER hawkish - in a "WHEN we are at war with Iran" kind of way. This is based on me reading her website during the campaign (as well as the debates, but I was most impressed with what she actually put in WRITING - eek!). It was shocking to me, actually.

BUT - I am sooo happy she will be Sec. of State! I like her personally, she was a great senator and is a GREAT, uber-competent working politician. So I think she'll be great at enacting Obama's foreign policy - whatever that may be (he was always a bit opaque on that one - but his stated positions were NOT as hawkish as hers.)

Eeesh, I find myself chiming in a lot around here based on the fact that I read what each of them had to say about themselves when they were primary candidates!

Is it because the coverage of them on TV was so oversaturated that many seem to have not read what they actually said about themselves?

@OhDeer: No to what? That you say she was "SUPER hawkish" is an opinion you fail to butress with any facts beyond your aghast reaction to some poor wording on her website. She is and has been an advocate of diplomacy throughout the election. She's even worked to broker peace in her career. You seem to think Obama is less of a hawk, while he pretended to for some time, to court voters on the left, he made an about-face for the general election. During the primaries he positioned himself as bravely anti-war when he had been anything but during his career. It's easy to spin your record when you don't hardly have one.

Secretary of State is the most powerful cabinet position. Do you seriously think if Obama was so different from Clinton when it came to foreign policy, he would have put her there? It's not a "follow orders" kind of job, she'll be making policy. In other words, if she's too hawkish to be your president, then she's too hawkish to be your SecState, and so is he for that matter.

I don't think the propaganda put together for their websites by staff members is the be all-end all for candidate information. In addition to the websites, I paid attention to what they had done. And I didn't assume vague platitudes would equal a dove in office.

I watched all of this live this morning (I'm taking a well-earned day off for the good of my mental health) and I didn't catch who the guy was who did the introduction. I'm seriously lovin' this dude for the way he obliquely bashed the outgoing Bushies. He had one particularly pointed jab that was cheered by his colleagues and for the life of me I can't remember it - still slightly hung over from last night's celebrating of today's day off work.

Anyway, I have serious love for that guy this morning. He was almost good enough to cure hangover and its just such a relief to hear people being able to speak the truth about how badly fucked up the last 8 years have been.

With each confirmation my soul feels lighter and lighter. This is a huge weight lifted off.

For the past eight years, every time I read the news or current events or politics stories, I got this weird headachy feeling in my head and chest, kind of like I was about to have a stroke. It's been 72 hours since I felt that.

I am really looking forward to at least four years without that awful strokey feeling!!!

When the administrations start tinkering against civil rights, the feds start making files of everyone and their brother who are in civil rights/independence movements in the US territories. One feels like one is genuinely living in an Orwellian 1984 land.
