I love magazines, from Harper's to tabloid trash. What the hell else am I supposed to read in the bath or on a short-haul flight? a book? Get bent! I really do love them, though.

I'm so over magazines, but that may be partly because I worked as an editor for 15 years. The only one I find worth reading these days is the New Yorker.

I get some magazines. I get Fitness, Women's Health, Cooking Light, Gourmet, Food & Wine, Fair, Allure, and Lucky. I wish I could stop Allure and Lucky but they auto-renewed them before I could stop them. *sigh* I want to start getting Oxygen or Muscle & Fitness Hers. I like the exercises to make you strong, not just toned.

I actually started to subscribe to magazines once the economy took a nosedive because of the break you get off the newstand price. I really enjoy spending my Wednesday with Sports Illustrated and my Friday with Entertainment Weekly (although the quality of that mag has dropped significantly).

The one thing I found is that I'm actually less likely to read a monthly mag in a timely fashion when I subscribe then when I get it on the newstand. I haven't opened a Vogue in months even though it keeps showing up (I really need to ask Conde Nast to switch my subscription to the New Yorker or something, maybe extend Vanity Fair).

But I hope not too many more mags fold. What will I do on long plane trips without a good glossy?

I would be sad if I lost the ability to read Vanity Fair and the New Yorker in the tub. There's this little warning that came with my laptop about not using it in the bath, as death could result.

I used to spend a LOT of money on magazines just picking them up at the supermarket check out line. Then my husband and I made some budgeting rules and that was one of the first things to go. So you can blame the magazine's downfall on me if you want, because I think that I was the only one keeping a few of those stupid publications afloat. Now I just buy Real Simple and the Weight Watchers magazine. Because I like to be fat shamed while I'm on the crapper.

I'm not a huge consumer of magazines because I just don't have time, but I think I'd cry a little if they actually disappeared. Magazines have been my airplane reading of choice for ages now- it's the only time I don't even attempt to get academic reading done. I get to the airport, I buy two trashy fashion ladymags that I would never read otherwise. Two magazines fill the time from after security until I land perfectly, because my flight home is an hour and a half. And it's a treat, because I sit there and relax with my cup of coffee and my mind-numbing magazine and don't have to think.

I hate magazines because of the SHEER FUCKING BULK of paper. I don't have a subscription to anything. Hell, I hate getting paper mail at all, and I do all my student loans, bank statements, utility bills, cell phone, cable, etc payments online.

They also smell really bad and make my hands feel weird, and they make ME feel bad about myself and repeat the same tired "OMG NEW SKINCARE FASHION SEX TIPS!!11" ad infinitum. No, I can't go shopping in my closet. No, that $100 potion is not going to significantly improve the quality of life. No, most of those "sex tips" are kind of obvious, arbitrary, or just plain dumb.

Mags, if you would make something that I want to read, and if you would magically haul your bulk off to the recycling so I don't have to walk four flights of stairs while carrying thirty pounds of Calvin Klein One Eternity Summer Splash Revisited Orangina Podunk Obsession 28 The Return Floral Light-scented slimy paper, I might consider getting with you. As it is, I kinda don't like you.

Maybe I'm just cheap, but why would I spend $5.99 on a magazine that I can flip through in a half hour? I'd rather spend the $ on a paperback and read the magazine on my lunch break.

I have not bought one single mag since I have started reading/commenting on Jez (aside from The New Yorker, cause my parents subscribe to it). Mags do not let you talk back (comment)--Jez does. So, Jez, thank you for breaking my addiction to ladymags and tabloids.

@anna.the.zombie.kitteh: I really do think that is one major root of the problem....people now, especially younger people, are used to generating their own content, giving feedback instantly, etc., and magazines don't allow that. So people go to blogs and web sites to do that instead of reading magazines. Magazines just have to figure out how to make those people happy while still making money.

@anna.the.zombie.kitteh: I remember seeing someone reading a newspaper supplement with the Oscars as the cover story on the following Tuesday morning and I was thinking 'Wait - the Ocars were ages ago?!' because I enjoyed the SJs, comments and clips online 36 hrs before and it felt like days.
