She got nervous and put her foot in her mouth. I'm not condoning rape jokes, but it doesn't seem like it comes from a misogynistic place in this scenario.
I have often made jokes in public that have made me immediately cringe afterwards. It usually happens when I am nervous or out of my element.
I know this might not be a popular opinion, but I still found her interview less annoying than January Jones' recent appearances.
The shocking part of that interview is discovering that what I thought was a horrible, fakey minstrel show of a South American accent is actually her real accent.
If she was 13 it was rape. No such thing as consent for a 13 year-old - legally depending on what country she was living in - morally in the whole damn universe.
I saw this - I felt bad for her, because I'm pretty sure that was a major case of nerves and wanting to be funny and talking too quickly and foot-in-mouth. When she said she was 13, I think her thought process went like this:'oh-shit-that-sounds-too-young-to-be-having-sex': "I was raped", 'oh-shit-that-is-possibly-the-worse-thing-I-could-say-in-the-world-ever-maybe-if-I-laugh-really-hard-people-won't-notice', "HA HA HA".
@Diziet_Sma: Agreed. I don't like rape jokes any more than the next person, but I do have an off-color sense of humor, and especially when I am nervous it can come off wrong.
I'm hoping she just got nervous and started making horrible jokes. I have a friend like this and she once made a joke about her brother being autistic in front of the mother of an autistic child (I think it was like "Oh, well it's great to see that he's doing so well. You know, we used to think my brother was autistic." cue nervous laughter). She began to immediately apologize while the mother gave her a bad look (as did I) but she said that it was alright. I could tell that it was a genuine mistake because my friend was born without the ability to filter her speech. I have a feeling she too was born without a speech filter.
@JessickerFletcher: Yeah, but...??? Chalk it up to nerves I guess, but would a RAPE JOKE ever pop in to your head because you were nervous? I don't care how nervous or foot-in-the-mouth I am (which, btw, is like all the time)-- I'm never nervous enough to spew out a rape joke.
@MsAnthrope: Sometimes people just get nervous and say stupid/horrible things. Normally, I would agree with you but I imagine that being on live TV with millions of viewers and having to be smart, charming, and funny would certainly rack the nerves. Plus, her laugh towards the end was pretty uncomfortable.
I'm looking at the gay guy's question like this: as a straight girl with gay male friends, if they wanted to have babies and got all involved with my privates business I would NOT be their friends anymore. I might beat them up, too.
So yeah, punch them in the vagina. And then don't return their calls. #potpsychology
@brattonwall: hmmm....how pricey is it to fly from canada to new york? i'll investigate and get back to you. it's likely that we would change the rules, if it's within budget. #potpsychology
Tracy: you look like this bookish, upper-middle class Jewish friend I had in 4th grade. Actually, it looks cute on you? Not to sound weird. #potpsychology
