I'm a bit late, so maybe someone's already said this: Unemployment is back where it was when Reality Bites was in theaters and no one is buying anything anywhere.

Not true, for the past two weeks there's been a run on gunshops in the south and west. Colorado and Texas have had record sales on guns and assault rifles, as most people think (or "fear" as the articles say) that Obama and a Democratic Congress will re-ban automatic rifles.

So, basically, Obama has already starting boosting the economy!

I am a huge fan of Waxman pushing for E&C. Let's get some shit DONE on energy, climate change, health care, etc. Do NOT need some stupid protectionist bullshit right now.

And if you pick Larry Summers, Obama, you are getting your first of many strongly worded letters from me, your tough love constituent J.D.Regent.

Obama may have won Omaha, but Lee Terry still gets to keep his seat? Too bad for Jim Esch, the young lawyer (yes, ladies, he's also cute) who came close to beating him this time around.

Waxman LOVES the media. If he's head of Energy and Commerce, that will make my job easier. Also, since the House doesn't have a separate committee for health care like the Senate does, Waxman would also be in a position to push an Obama administration's health care initiatives.

@ManicPixiePoliticalGirl: I was disappointed when I read Terry had won too. Nebraska also passed 424 which bans affirmative action. The ban screws women the most, since there are laws in place to prevent from racial discrimination.

All of that aside though, Obama taking Omaha makes me immensely happy. I grew up there surrounded by a lot of hateful, racist bullshit and I don't know what's happened in the 5 1/2 years I've been away but holy hell keep moving in that direction, Omaha.

I mean, I don't want to belittle Warren Buffet, but he could, like, not take all the credits and deductions that contribute to his low effective tax rate and simply pay his actual rate which is, I guarantee, not lower than his secretary's.

Your assumptions are probably wrong . . . its the fact that is carried interest is taxed as capital gains. 15% is not greater than 25% no matter how you cut it.

Dick Armey can bite my hairy ass. Reaganomics is what cause me to graduate from college in '91 with no money and no prospects, in a sinking job market. The "trickling down" that was supposed to occur by giving the rich tax breaks doesn't appear to have occurred in my case, or the case of anyone I knew.

True, government is too big, but not from a standpoint of function, more from a function of size. The Federal government is bloated from years of debt spending and military buildup, much of which happened on the Republican watch. Pot. Kettle. Black.

"[Reagan] understood that big government is cruel and uncaring of individual aspirations..."

Yes, you stupid fucking shithead. In a society, not everyone's individual aspiration can be taken into account. Society is built on the basic principle that, yeah, for the sake of the whole, certain things that we might want to do, we can't do.

This isn't cruelty, Dick Armey, you idiot.

Christ, he's got the political sensibilities of a four year old.

"No, Dick, you're not allowed to pee on the cat."

    "But I WANT to!"

"Dick, you're not allowed to pee on the cat."

@vamusical: Because they are not the ones who have to have prosperity "trickle down" to them. The richest among us have always gotten that way of the sweat and toil of others and have been loathe to part with their millions. That's why McCain harped on "spreading the wealth" so much -- he wanted to frighten the rich people into believe Obama would show up with the 82nd Airborne and take the gold candle sticks from their mansions before setting them ablaze ala Sherman's March to the Sea.

@braak: It's the same philosophy that has been written into the Constitution, and yet Republicans cannot get a grip on the idea. The government is not there for each and every one of us, but for the nation as a whole. And no matter how hard the government tries, there will be people who do not benefit from its policies, and that's that. The government is required to work for the greater good, which is why the last 8 years have been so hellish, because the Bush Administration was only looking out for itself, it's cronies, and the causes they thought just.

@NefariousNewt, Serving at the Pleasure of the President-Ele...: I don't think it's that they don't understand it, I think it's that they don't like it.

Even now, when we're faced with a crisis caused by letting everybody do whatever they want, when poor Alan Greenspan has to sit down in front of Congress and say, "Yeah, I thought letting everyone do what they want would be a good idea. I mean, I didn't think they'd be assholes." when every law and policy is necessarily an example of abrogation of short-term success for the sake of long-term stability, still people say, "But taxes! Taxes! Taxes!"

This is because myopia is inherent. You have to learn foresight, and we have an embarrassingly poor system of public education.
