"Debra's reputation as a great talent, as well as her reputation as a difficult actress grew with her next film, Terms of Endearment (1983), which not only earned her a second Oscar nomination as Best Actress but also won the Best Picture as well. She also earned the Best Actress Award from the National Society of Film Critics. Debra was at the top of her game and was the most sought after actress in Hollywood, but she turned down quality roles and lucrative offers for three years. Some speculated that the reason was her romantic involvement with Robert Kerrey, then-governor of Nebraska, while others have stated it was her back problems. Whatever her reasons were, her career lost its heat. Her long-delayed film Mike's Murder (1984) didn't help matters either when it became a critical and financial flop. Debra tried to revive her career by starring in the big-budget comedy Legal Eagles (1986) but she disliked the film so much that she publicly stated that the director, Ivan Reitman was one of the two worst directors she worked with, the other director being Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)). She also walked out on her agency, CAA, but returned several years later."

I will note that Ed Norton is just as difficult and is still working.

No, it's not. She's right, we've been bitching about this issue since the dawn of film. There are plenty of women in Hollywood with power now, more than ever before. And there are many women casting agents/agencies.
If Tyler Perry* can do it for Black people, so can woman, ya dig?
*not the greatest example, I know.

I actually enjoyed "Why Did I Get Married". Any movie that includes Jill Scott and Idris Elba is a freakin hit in my book.

Something is not right though in Hollywood if our voices are not getting heard.

Where is it written that Debra punched Shirley in the face? I've always heard Debra farted under the covers, but that's it.

1. There must be at least 2 women characters in the movie
2.They have to talk to one another
3.about something other than men
very few movies pass this test...:(

I have such love for this film. In an era where there truly are no really good female characters, RGM stands out.

I dunno, I just found the women in RGM to be clichés - the sensible older sister, the neurotic, tattooed, crazy goth-girl, the distant mother. . . the father was interesting, though.

I'm all for writing more, but I do believe that we should encourage all writers to try and write (or at least help in the writing of) a wide breadth of characters, both male and female, of all races. We must remember that there are more differences within a certain group rather than between groups.

Mostly tho...she is fierce and smart and amazingly normal.

i was watching 'die hard' the other day and remarked out loud that bonnie bedelia, the actress who played bruce willis's wife in the film was actually in the same age range as him - in fact, bonnie bedelia is OLDER than bruce willis! that film was made in 1988. would you ever see that in an action movie today? nope.

That's just the first part of the battle, though. The second part is to actually convince studio heads that our stories are worth telling. The third part is to teach studios heads how to actually market our films once they put them out.
Many a film has died from bad marketing. I go to so many movie festivals and some of the more amazing ones never see the light of day...

Hollywood needs to understand that women do not fade out at age 25; they do not stop falling in love or messing up or being interesting or sexy or creative or troubled or worth watching.
Simple and brilliant, summing things up perfectly.

Also, she's right.
