I stumble across this same photo someplace else. Those kids were from the Dutch embassy. They weren't Mexican. But there are a surprisingly large number of blonde native born Mexicans whose grandparents or great grand parents emigrated from Europe. Same is true across all of South America.
And as someone mentioned earlier its criminally insane how all the Mexican magazines and tv shows ignore people with Indian features. #queenbeatrix
Hmm. I thought it was going to say Jalisco (cause they have a very large white population) or something. But, nope, it's Mexico City. Makes sense since Mexico City is a huge trap fro expatriates and immigrants from South America/Europe/Middle East.
ETA: I hate that all the pictures from Mexico shown in magazines, tv, other media always show pretty white kids but they never show any pretty brown one's except when they're showcasing poverty. Blrgh. Mexico get over your colorism it's kind of pathetic. You know most of your population is mestizo not criollo.
The Reuters article uses the phrase "plan an attack" like eight times, but it's unclear whether by "attack" they just mean running naked in front of some ceremony with the queen or something more serious than that. They talk about another attack on her (totally unrelated to this guy) in which 8 people died, but it seems like his only previous method of protest has been the streaking. It's kind of an important distinction, no?
@Breamworthy: News on the radio here reported that they searched his house for weapons. So yeah, actual attack.
I think it was more of a way for him to hit the media again though. No one cares about his streaking. No one ever did. The only reason it got any attention is because a tv show host tried to pull his pants down on national television a while back.
If he made threats against the Queen, then that's sick. Especially this year, since on April 30th last, Queen's Day, a man plowed his way through spectators watching the Royal family (driving his car at very high speed) and ended up killing 8 people.
Whatever his motivations, his actions are tacky and tasteless.
At least he's streaking for something and not running around naked like your regular old DOUCHE.
Anyway, I see how running around naked is a metaphor for an animal without it's fur, but I'm hoping that this doesn't catch on with too many other animal rights activists. Peta has proved that they will fight for animals by objectifying women in the process. Even when I was twelve I saw through Peta's bs.
Last year (my senior year of high school) I went to a journalism convention where Peta had a booth. My girlfriend and I read a letter from them on the bus, aimed at young journalists, that was so full of manipulative LIES it made us sick. It is really disconcerting to think about what a bad name Peta gives actual vegans, vegetarians, and animal rights activists.
Most of the Peta fans I know watch a video of some animals dying and join the club. They don't really see how horrible and manipulative Peta is. They really hurt more animals than they save. And Peta2, aimed at a younger generation encourages vandalism and several other unlawful, disruptive means of protest. What a way to get people to see things from our side.
@KalamataInterrobang: In this case it's not about the streaking though. I'm not sure if he ever even got arrested for that. Did you read this, "has been arrested on suspicion of planning an attack against fur-wearing Queen Beatrix?"
They looked for weapons.
@haguenite: I don't know. They kept saying "planning an attack", but like Breamworthy said, I don't know what an "attack" means. I don't know if he was going to actually do something or just... Streak.
@Eustace Silly: A Dutch TV show host had the same idea as you. This asshole ran through a taping of his show, and the host was all, chill dude. Let's talk about this.
And then he tried to pull his pants down, cause you're not a streaker if you're wearing clothes.
What are people's thoughts on the more extreme forms of protest by animal rights activists? Like, red paint, physical attacks, blowing up labs, setting animals free, etc.? I'm curious to know!
@elliebean: I'm against it. I think PETA et al actually undermine their cause by pissing people off. There are so many ways to protest that don't involve breaking the law. Streaking is well and good, but assault (paint-throwing) or breaking and entry, not great.
@elliebean: I agree, damaging other people's property won't make people listen, it perpetuates the "crazy hippie, tree hugger" stereotype that is unfair.
Streaking, pretty damn funny and harmless.
@MissFiFi: I'm with both of you. I'm against anything that compromises the rights of other people to make the point. I'm always curious to hear the reasoning from the other side; I wonder what drives the thought process/if people that launch attacks think they are making a reasonable point, etc.
@elliebean: Aside from the other points made here, which are good, my bottom line is this:
Would we tolerate this from anti-choice protesters?
My answer is no. Both animal rights protesters who engage in this kind of protest (not ALL animal rights activists) and anti-choice protesters same kind of attitude: that one moral view has the right to resort to violence and physical threats to impose itself on others. That attitude is unacceptable.
@elliebean:
I don't call myself vegan, but try and eat a mostly plant based diet and the extreme forms of protest drive me crazy! It's that kind of shit that makes everyone think I'm crazy. I blame PETA for my roommate giving me stank face when I politely decline her pound cake.
@RainyKate: That's a really interesting comparison; essentially the arguments are the same in both cases in that they are arguing for the rights of something that does not have the ability to hold its own or defend itself.
@smallc: according to their website, PETA claims that they do not actively identify with the abortion rights movement. But, um, I think their FAQs page has a lot of "this is what we think in theory" that doesn't always play out in practice.
As an aside, they also point out that they do not condone violence, and I'd have to agree that ALF is way more terrifying in that regard.
@Ramseylicious: As a vegetarian who eats eggs and cheese for protein, I get criticism from both sides for my choices (and a lot of acceptance too, not to negate that).
I think the existence of groups like PETA has helped to divide different groups more distinctly, perhaps because both ends of the extremes get their backs up about the other side and polarize themselves even more. I think, though, the attitude from the side that uses animals and eats meat etc. is more, "do what you want, but don't infringe on my rights or my ability to earn an income", whereas PETA et al gets pushy about converting views.
