Eh. I also consider the context in which the picture was taken. I know a photog who is a total pig, but because he has been in the biz a while and has had big fashion clients his work would be considered high brow. When I look at it, though, I mostly just see fancy nudie pics.

Thanks for this. That post you all did about SS magazines was.....enlightening, to say the least, around the community's biases.

I don't mind nudity in fashion, at all. It's like to told my boyfriend the other day when showing him the spread eagle AA ads--in your face sex is not dangerous. Violence (also seen in fashion) and more subversive misogyny are dangerous.

Then again, I am not automatically adverse to objectification in general.

I always subscribed to the belief that you can't place hard and fast rules to the line between porn and art. You truly have to judge each piece on its own. That said, I think that if you look at it, and the intent is for you to only want to fuck, then it's porn. If it is meant for you to do anything but want to fuck, then it's art. Straight stuntin'=you want to fuck the girls, not much more is given. Deyn's jumping around naked=you might want to fuck her, but there is more than just sex implicit in the pictures.

@Chivone: That doesn't really work, though, because of intent and how each individual gets his/her rocks off. The intent may not be for someone to say "I want to fuck her" but that doesn't mean someone won't think it.

@Penny: Well, if this is the business of regulating, you can only go by the intent. I mean, I know people who get off on scalp massages so a shampoo ad is downright indecent and comparable to softcore, but I wouldn't rate a herbal essence ad NC-17. I agree with you though, but if I were to put guidelines, I'd go with intent.

@Chivone: I think that brings up an interesting question - why do we separate the sexual response from all other responses? Why is something that arouses sexual desire in us seen as pornography while something that inspires almost every other emotional or physical reaction can be seen as art?

I find the categorization fascinating. I do it myself, and I suspect a lot of it is due to the fact that I was raised to see sex in the same category of human activity as going to the bathroom or farting - something everyone does but you aren't supposed to talk about at all. Which is weird and sad when you think about it, but there you go.

@whynotshesaid: I always figured old straight white men don't trust other old straight white men. That's why all things that may cause a OSWM to be aroused is covered up and hidden. I think it's the same mentality that freaks out at women breastfeeding in public. Or why there are so many defenses based on "passion." Or how OSWM freak out at Lady Justice baring a breast.
OSWM are puritanical and figure they may be able to handle exposure to such indecent images but can see how other, less disciplined folk, fall prey to lust.

Re: the peacock feather-- I think the distinction is the context. The sole purpose of an American Apparel ad is to sell clothes-- the sexuality in those images is just a means to that end, which is why it's more of an objectification. The peacock feather image, however, exists for its own sake. Yes, the magazine is using a crotch to sell something (magazines), but the image stands on its own as an artistic expression.
Aside: How can I run around with a peacock feather between my thighs without getting arrested?

I'm going to guess that V was going for a style here, not just really bad photoshopping. The probably should have actually used a masking film and x-acto to get the right result, instead of re-creating it with photoshop. It might have worked.

to me, it looks like they were purposefully going for a trashy look. there's enough silhouetting programs out there to mask out backgrounds more perfectly, if that's what they wanted to do. which they do all the time when they put the cover logo half in front of, or half behind, a model's head.

nah, the florescent colors, hard lines, sloppy silhouetting, the font choice~~ this is their interpretation of "edgy." and you're right, naomi pulls off the idea best.
