I've always found it weird that the Puritans are remembered as valiantly escaping oppression in England, when their intentions all along were to establish an oppressive system of their own. I think Bill Bryson is more droll at pointing that out than me, however.

I read somewhere, though many nations/tribes were completely wiped out, there are more Native Americans now than there ever were at any other point in time, but I don't have a citation at hand for it.
Thanksgiving is an excellent time to discuss these issues.

Jeans and a cashmere sweater here, with a T-shirt and sneakers in my bag for the long after-dinner walk in the warm Texas autumn air. I also bring my collection of kitschy aprons for people to wear while prepping and staging the meal.

Although... since we started the pre-Thanksgiving street hockey game, I have noticed things getting a bit more casual and straying into nice jeans territory. I suppose that's what I'll likely be sporting this year.
