    I hear them on the whole ill-fitting bra deal, but where can I get a proper boob-analysis in my neck of the woods? All I know is Victoria's Secret and I constantly hear how bad they are. So I've been wearing the same 4 bras for the last 6 years...


    Any suggestions?

    @tini: there's probably some websites with measuring instructions. i'd start there. although, a professional fitting would probably feel pampering. most department stores offer fittings too, so i would go to a higher end one. good luck!

    @graceful_gamine: The measuring things on those sites never work for me, though. If I measure and try on a bra that those measurements tell me to wear, the back rides up and it doesn't lay flat in the front and all the other things they tell you are signs of a ill-fitting bra.

    What did women do before corsets and bras came along? Did they strap 'em down like Ayla in the Clan of the Cave Bear?


    I know some of us need support, but not everybody, unless our main goal is to be pleasin' to the menfolks. Ill-fitting bras seem like a "solution" (the phrase "suspension bridge" was used in the article) to a "problem" (boob sagging=unattractive?) that is only causing real problems. Before we go any further, I know some people really *do* need the support, and I'm not talking about them. I'm thinking more of bra-wearing for reasons of vanity and pleasing other people.


    I know my dissertation-writing-induced life of bralessness and elastic-band pants is perhaps removed from reality, but why do we wear bras anyway? Most of the world for most of time seems to have gotten by fine without them. The first thing I do when I get home is extricate the girls from their booby-cage. Like I said, some ladies have very real support issues, but how many of us squeeze into uncomfortable contraptions just because it's a cultural imperative? (I admit, I do, when I have to leave my cave-like writing hovel.)

    @Pomonarona: You probably won't even see this comment cuz it's so late at night but everyone was ripping on you and I just wanted to let you know SOMEONE agreed...I'm a 32B and only wear bras to show off the ladies to better advantage. (The day I first found a push-up bra that fit I nearly died of happiness staring at my own cleavage. But I digress...) But yeah, it totally IS a cultural imperative, and you're not being pretentious OR sneering. I remember once during Rush Week at my sorority I had some girl come up to me and tell me I was making everyone really uncomfortable because I didn't wear bras, and I was completely shocked b/c I was wearing a tank top AND a shirt & really didn't see what the big deal was. And after Teri Hatcher refused to keep wearing bras on Desperate Housewives I believe they digitally edited her nipples out. So yeah, there's a bit of cultural weirdness there...totally hope you see this! :)

    @Cesybabe or Nirvanah Crane: I was freaking awesome at selling them when I was in Brownies! Like seriously, I could move boxes of that shit (and that's not even counting what my parents bought)!

    You stayed through to Girl Guides? I did Pippins and Brownies (which I loved), but I just wasn't feelin' it in GG, so I changed to Sea Scouts for a bit (at my father's insistence), then gave up. I fucking loved Brownies though; when I started, the uniforms were still brown and we had to wear the pinafores.

    @hellodarling!: Yeah, like the pips in an apple. I think that's how our fellow Antipodeans and the British do it, too. So it goes: Pippins (6 to 7ish), Brownies (7-8ish to 10ish), and Guides (10 to 14?). I think Rangers may come after that, but I'm not sure.

    In Scouts (which is traditionally the male version, but both of my little sisters did it instead of Brownies/Guides), it goes Keas, Cubs, Scouts, and you could be either in the Land Scouts version, or the Sea Scouts. We grew up next to a lake and lots of rivers, so my siblings and I did Sea Scouts.

    @Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: Nah I never did it, joke in my family is that I was off sick the day the note came to class inviting us to become Pippins. The sisters did Pippins and Brownies then quit. I did ballet instead, felt quite superior to the lowly Brownies!

    @dirtybee says we bee obama jammin: We had a case in NZ. Old crazy guy went to a student bar, bar refused to serve him. So he took it to Human Rights Commission and the news (in NZ, its really really easy to get on the National News if you want), and so the bar relented. Interesting situation.
