Just like some people have great athletic ability, some people have great intelligence, some people have musical ability, some people also have physic ability. It just means that they pick up on "stuff" better than others. Also, they listen and look for clues, and are able to interpret them.

My ability is on the weaker side, compared to professionals. For me, it seems that I tend to make an observation or ask a question that gets answered. Like, this weekend I wondered if there'd always been one person who does the voice for Dora (I have a 3 year old, we watch a lot of Dora). Then today, in Dirt Bag, I see that there's going to be a new voice for Dora. Nothing that is going to move mountains, but I find it pretty cool.

Also, John Edwards said that people always ask him, if you're so psychic how come you haven't figured out the winning numbers for the lottery? He said he's sure every intiutive has probably sat down at the Roulette table and asked their guides for the numbers, and it doesn't work that way, that the guides won't let it. So he'd play 23, and 24 would come up, then he'd play 9, and 10 would come up. He felt like they were saying, "Nope. That's not what we're here for."

A great intuitive who I've spoken with is Tony LeRoy. Another fabulous one, who's book Remembering the Future is one you should read to understand this more, is Colette Baron-Reid.

Don't judge it all based on the $10 palm readers.

@Rona: I get that sometimes too, sometimes very intensely. Like I will envision something totally random and within a few seconds it happens, my Mother gets it as well. We've always called it ESP.

I have a tarot deck because I like the pretty pictures and symbolism. I don't believe it's anything supernatural or metaphysical, but the cards and their meanings always give you something to think about. Like you may draw a card that reminds you about transitions and changes, or about beginnings, or about creativity, or any number of things that are easy to forget about and/or dismiss in the average bland workaday life.

I don't think it predicts anything, but it does remind you to keep your eyes open for things that might be happening around you. It's not magical or anything, but the tarot addresses a lot of concepts that are kind of universal to being a human being, and sometimes it's kinda eye-opening to be reminded of those concepts.

I am a huge fan of James Randi. HUGE! I know this should all, realistically, be utter and complete bullshit.

Yet, I can't help it. I want to believe it. I want to believe that there are people who can talk to the dead and see the future and whatnot. I know, realistically, it's not possible. But, I can't help but wish it was real.

That sounds lame, doesn't it? I know, I know...

I'd love to go to a "real" psychic. But, do they even exist? I doubt it, though I'd like to think so.

jezzies, please please please avoid storefront neon sign "spiritual advisor" and palm readers. they. are. con. artists. it's fine for a $10 palm reading for fun, but don't take them seriously. When they sniff fresh blood (persuadable, poor sense of self, desperate)they will take you for a LOT more than $10. best not to go there, and if you must, to spend some time and effort to seek out the good ones. there are a few, a very few, really talented intuitives out there, but it's difficult to find them, and their talents may be "raw" rather than honed to a fine point. they do exist. just be *really* careful out there until you find one, should you decide to go down that road. just remember -- if in doubt, don't do it/believe it/pay it.

I subscribe to a school of thought that I suppose may be called economic darwinism: if you are dumb enough to fork over cash for something as completely made up as 'psychic readings' (see also: (s)"CAM"), then you deserve to be in bad economic straights.

I like the "Free Will Astrology" by Rob Brezsny. It seems to be a bit tongue in cheek. My favorite was one where he recommended that I clean my desk to straighten up my life - I am a total neat-freak, so this little piece of advice is taped to my bulletin board much to the amusement of co-workers.

I do believe SOME people may be endowed with ESP or psychic abilities, but they are few and far between.

I once paid $20 for a tarot card reading in Woodstock and the guy told me I was going to have allergies.

I'm like, really? There's a Sinus Card? I already HAVE ALLERGIES, you douche bag! We live in the HUDSON FUCKING VALLEY, Hay Fever Capital of the U.S.!

But it was for an article, so I got to expense it AND make fun of him in print, so it's all good.

I'm way too much of a nervous nelly to go to psychics. I don't believe a word of a good predictions and the bad ones scare the hell out of me. My horoscope in a yoga magazine recently told me a "career change is on the horizon." I'm now analyzing everything my boss says and does in fear she's getting ready to fire me. Which she's given no indication of, but I'm still nervous.

My grandmother started going to psychics after my grandfather died. She's one of those pagan-y Catholics, who prays to "saints" (aka old pagan gods and goddesses). Last time she went, her psychic told her that I was her moral compass (she's a Catholic Republican, I'm an atheist socialist-radical feminist), she would meet a man named Norman who had a boat and a dog by October of that year and form a romantic relationship with him (she has yet to meet anyone named Norman, or anyone with a boat for that matter, and still as single as the day my grandfather died), and that my sister had the GHOST OF A BABY FOLLOWING HER AROUND. For serious. The psychic told my grandmother that my sister (never pregnant!) had had an abortion or a miscarriage, and that the soul of a little baby was always with her because it was the soul of her DEAD BABY.
