Huh. I was pretty certain that trend was dead circa at least three years ago.

I went to Germany for the World Cup, and I knew that the look was in its death throes when I saw packs of 14 year old German boys sporting popped collars like a bunch of Duke frat boys. Then I pretty much assumed it was over back in the US of A.

Look - it doesn't look cool on Bastian Schweinsteiger, it doesn't look cool on you, it doesn't look good on anyone, OK?

My friend and I constructed the ultimate in douchebaggery.

1. Baseball cap - worn on the crown of the head with the bill straight up in the air. "Distressed" caps only.

2. Pomade - baby spikes in the hair, under cap.

3. Polo shirt - collar popped.

4. Puka shell necklace.

5. Sweatshorts - also "distressed" or "faded".

6. Thong sandals that are also "distressed".

7. Axe bodyspray.

8. Entitled attitude, lack of knowledge about things other than self.

@aubonpam: I just started working at a college. 99.9% of girls I see are dressed as follows: Skinny jeans tucked into Uggs, hoodie from a college other than this one, north face fleece, pashmina scarf, high ponytail, pearl or diamond stud earrings. It's like a time warp.

My son will love this, as he has been popping his collars for some time. It should be noted that he is not yet 9 1/2 and should probably be no one's style guru, but he, at least, will be pleased. Nice to know they're looking out for 9 year olds at the WSJ.

Confession: My boyfriend pops the collar on his coat when its really cold outside and he doesn't have a scarf. He would never do it on a shirt, though.
