I'm dreading the day my cat dies. He's 13, which isn't way old, but I have these freak outs when I have to check to see if he's still breathing. But Bells is gonna live forever right? Right?!
We've had our pets cremated so we can have them buried with us when the time comes. Fortunately the brother-in-law is a funeral director so we're sure our wish will be granted.
On a sad note, I'm taking our 19 year old to the vet in an hour. I'm pretty sure she has developed diabetes and is generally failing fast. She isn't comfortable anywhere, does not seem to sleep, won't sit or sleep near us, isn't using the litterbox and cries at the door. I think she's telling me it's her time.
@PreposterousHypothesis: Sadly, my parents backyard is pretty much a pet graveyard from all of the animals our family has owned or injured wildlife we'd encountered since they moved there 35 years ago.
If Socks'es ashes were spread in the garden, what exactly is the point of keeping his urn in the Presidential Library? Or does it really contain ashes from the cigars Bill smoked, after Monica had finished finding a rather unusual use for them.
@Rare Affinity: Maybe not all the ashes were spread?
When my dog died they cremated him, and we spread his ashes, but we didn't really know what to do with his urn. I think it's just in a drawer somewhere.
@MissMoneypenny: Just seems a somewhat macabre memento to have on display. I think we returned my mother's urn to the funeral directors once I had scattered the ashes. Might as well re-use them.I know they arrived in a rather chic silver and blue bag so no one would guess what they contained.
@Lymed: Betty Currie had lost her own pet shortly before, and apparently Socks really liked her and always slept on a chair near her while still at the White House.
@BlondeGoddess: That is good to know, because the rumor I heard was that the Clintons perferred Buddy to Socks and they basically abandoned Socks...I figured that maybe there was more to the story.
@EvilVaginaTroll: I think, as with the death of any loved one, the sadness of your loss will never completely go away, but it will become less of a burden as time goes by. I lost my dad a few years ago, and it still hits me sometimes and I just end up crying. But most days I just remember him fondly and I am okay, not nearly as consumed with grief as I was when it first happened. I am sure your grief will become more bearable with time. *hugs*
After my cat dies, I'm going to memorialize her by making her into a fur stole and wearing her everywhere. Everyone will flock to me, because what a great idea!
@morninggloria: I keep a box that I fill with kitten whiskers my kitties have shed so that I can use them as a cheap, renewable source of false eyelashes.
@Laulau: ya beat me to it. Gawd im sick of pet worship, too. animals are for eating, people. they are our servants and/or things to torture. not to hang up plaques for. think how many children now don't have plaques because socks got one!
I was wondering if Jezebel was going to talk about this latest suicide. I read about it this morning and I think the most heartbreaking part was that his sister, roughly the same age, found him and was holding onto his legs trying to pull him down and save him. Just so fucking pointless and senseless.
And of course the school is refusing to comment and will probably claim they 'did everything they could,' which we all know is bullshit. So many school officials are hands off when it comes to bullying, especially when it involves homophobic-based attacks.
@hovy: It really is a heartbreaking story. All taunting and bullying should be unacceptable, but it hurts more when you can guess that this kid probably did nothing to aggravate the bullies except exist. He reported the problem. He reached out to the teachers and staff of his school, people who supposedly care about his well-being (or at the very least are responsible for it during school hours). Nobody bothered to do anything about it, and that is truly chilling.
I wasn't interested in seeing the allegedly nude photos of Korean Abdul Jabaar but joyfully clicked through to look at Berlusconi. And what an awesome choice I made! I'm still giggling.

I have already informed both my cats that they are never allowed to die. And I am not getting teary-eyed. Those are allergies.

Sorry, I just got a kitty a couple weeks ago (named her Jezebel) and it's really kicked my fur-maternal instincts into overdrive.
