The fact that he's being touted as a pregnant man rubs a lot of people the wrong way. I don't really understand why it's rubbing them wrongly enough to make them threaten his or his family's lives, though. But I've never really understood that. People are still completely and wholly uncomfortable with transgendered people and the fact that this is being pushed in their faces is...somehow threatening to their ideals. But I've always been of the belief that if your beliefs are so solid and unshakable, then why are you afraid of things that oppose them?
Intolerant people get miffed about this because they're just intolerant of transgender people. Logical people get miffed because, genetically speaking, Thomas has done nothing worth mentioning.
I absolutely don't understand the hate at all:they're a couple who had a baby. Mazel tov. That's great for them. If what they have done, as them seem to stress, is just the same as anyone else (with which I completely concur) why do they make a big deal of this? I get annoyed when ANYONE, be they a transgender person or a Park Slope mom, act like she are the first and only person to ever carry a child to term. The world doesn't stop turning because of your pregnancy.
I watched this special, they seem like lovely people and the neighborhood threw him a baby shower. This part with the message made me cry. It's so sad that some people are that hateful. Especially wishing harm on a baby, god that's sad.
I have to admit I am curious about what needs to be done to legally be called a male. I had breast cancer with bilateral mastectomies and because of the hormonal component I had my ovaries removed as well. If I wanted to could I be legally deemed a man? What if I identified as a man with my current biology?
I think some people have a problem with it because of the grey area. I think they might also be a little disappointed that the first pregnant male isn't going to have to deliver a baby through his penis. At some point in labor lots of us have made that threat to out husbands. :)
The people who hate him hate themselves. It's called projection and those people need to seek therapy.
I love the Pregnant man and his wife. When I saw that her kids from her previous marriage LOVED their mother with Thomas and had NO problems with the pregnancy, I can't see any reason why STRANGERS should.
I have a question that I don't know the answer to. if he is a man, but he doesn't have male genitals, is his wife a lesbian? i mean, when they have sex, it's two female sex organs? i am honestly confused!
@lilydancing: This is gonna be TMI, but on certain hormone therapies, the clitoris itself can get pretty distended. To the point that it's like a small penis. It...yeah.
@lilydancing: I don't know how his wife identifies, but if he has the appearance of a male, and gender typical behavior of a male, then she might consider herself to be straight. i mean, if i fell for a guy, and discovered he was born a girl-- well, he's still a guy, to me. you know?
i'm currently reading a lot of posts on a baby message board and A LOT of women are really hateful towards the beaties. those that are against them say it's "unfair" he can have a child when so many women have been struggling. it makes no sense to me, really, if you have kids and you want to, go for it!
@axel_f: It's unfair that he has a working uterus? Just like it's unfair that all the other women out there with children have or had working uteri?
Not at all to diminish their frustration: I can't imagine the pain of struggling to get pregnant and seeing someone else be able to, but why the hate on him?
I wish them - the posters - and the Beaties all some happiness.
I wish these folks and folks like them all the best and I think they should have all the rights available to more traditional couples and families. And people who would threaten them or say such hateful things about them are clearly assholes.
However, there is something about this that makes me uncomfortable. I don't like saying that or thinking it, but there it is and I'll admit it. I think a lot of it has to do with the visual image of a "man" with a pregnant belly. It's like my brain says "Wait, what?"
@rubyinthedust: Further up the thread I noted feeling the same way and I think the response was helpful. Our own internal, visceral reactions are what they are. It's what we do with them (do we lash out in judgment, or do we use the experience to educate ourselves about tolerance?) that counts.
I think, also, the media and the world in general have a nice right shitstorm every time someone brings up the issue of gender identity. What makes a man a man, a woman a woman? Physical body? Mental gender?
Since everyone seems to feel the need to stick a toe in all the neighboring ponds, people don't like it when their nice little black and white lines get a bit of a swirl of grey going on.
