I think the flaw in this study is that they define bitchy as being competitive with other attractive women, when we all know bitchiness is so much greater and deeper than that.
Slightly off topic, but why did Dorothy wear those big blouses with the really high collars all the time? I've never seen anybody else wear those monstrosities. I'm pretty sure the collars got higher with every season of the show.
My mother has become a doll since menopause. I mean, this woman did not have a single maternal bone in her body and now she emails me every day and tells me she's proud of me, is very sweet and quite positive. She is just really happy. It makes me very hopeful.
I need a Ben Goldacre app on my computer so I can run this sort of shit through it and get a nice, pithy summary of all the many many ways in which it is wrong.
All I know is that from my own carefully collected anecdotal evidence (probably at least as scientifically rigorous as this study) women ie; my mom and aunt, definitely become MORE bitchy after menopause. But I think it's a good thing. They just don't care about pleasing people anymore or to obsess over what overs think of them. So they become kick-ass bitches. Hell yeah.
I think the word "questionable" can be attached to most studies nowadays. this study certainly qualifies. A 1000 women does not a reliable sample make, I don't care what statistics you choose to use to validate it.
Not to be off-topic, but is a show like The Golden Girls even possible in a tv-world obsessed with Blake Lively and the Spencer-Heidi bots running around?
I loooooved this show and can't see how many of the shows that are out right now would be appealing to anyone over the age of 25.
@kelsium: Oh man, those Red Hat ladies are brutal. Anytime I'm in Filene's Basement there's a whole gang of them being assholes on some "Girl's Weekend Out" trip.
@pantsless economist: I realised only recently (yeah, I did the math, how sad) that Joan Collins was only 48 when she was in Dynasty. And Linda Evans was only 39! They just seemed so much older.
No matter how old she got, Sophia still thought Blanche was a 50 year old mattress whose body was a temple-open to anyone day and night. So whatever, study, some people's talons sharpen with age.
