@goodcheapfun: My in-laws didn't even attempt to smooth things out. They just spent the rest of their lives writing us nasty letters about why they were right and we were wrong. About everything. Then when our daughter (their only grandchild) was old enough to write to them herself, they acted like dickheads.

The relationship finally pretty much ended when her grandfather wrote us a rude letter claiming that she never wrote a thank you note for a Christmas check that they actually never sent her. I think they thought they did, but they didn't. So they hate her.

All of this is, of course, MY fault because their son wasn't raised that way. He was raised to tell his wife to write thank you notes by god.

We were disinherited in favor of his sister long ago. FAir enough, she has narrowed her pared her life down to appear to be the perfect daughter they wanted and needed. No amount of money could compensate me, hubby or my daughter for that.

And the thing with Mom's pressuring their daughters/daughters in law for grandkids. I kind of get it, when your mom had her kids there was more pressure as she had to juggle many things- work, career, marriage, social life etc. With grandkids (particularly if she's retired) she can play a more fun role as opposed to the daily stresses of child raising. But listen, my womb doesn't hold the key to having this kind of interaction with children. You could volunteer at Sunday school, to babysit for a mom that lives close by, visit the kiddie wards in hospitals…etc. It's really annoying how some people just act as though their entitled to grandkids, you know, screw the interests for your daughter/daughter in law, I just want grandkids. Sheesh!!!!

My grandmother made some comment about me and my siblings never having children (I'm the oldest at 29) and my mom stuck up for us saying "So what if they don't? Why does it matter to you?" Then she launched into a monologue about how we have a right to do whatever we want with our lives and it is solely up to us. She's awesome.

It is often difficult for adult children to understand and process that their parents have ongoing lives which contain pain and upset separate from their own.

I have to say, one of the good things that came from my mom having a chronic illness is the understanding that my parents aren't these archetypal, all-powerful beings but people with hopes and fears and flaws. Some of my friends have a hard time accepting that. I remember I was going to go visit my parents because they needed some support during a family crisis, and I told a friend how it helps my mom & dad to have me there to listen to them vent, or give them advice, or cheer them up when they're upset. My friend was like, "That's awful. Children should never have to take care of their parents." And I just thought, oh, honey, you are in for a rude awakening when your parents get old.

@egg cream: egg cream, you are so sweet. You sound like my daughter. I try hard not to make demands on her that aren't her responsibility to take care of, but with a chronic illness myself, I so much appreciate her ability to make allowances for my limitations. And her kindness about it.
