And don't even get me started on the REGULAR, non-Loft actual honest-to-god Ann Taylor stores. I'm too poor to even walk into one of those. There's like a repulsor force field that does a full-on neural scan for memories of your prior years' tax return, and if your income is under a certain minimum, you can't even get into the store. True story. I tried once and I bounced right off.

@tscheese: I don't get NEAR the non-Loft stores, mostly because of the aforementioned expensive+dowdy combo. However, I've gotten some great pants at low prices at AT Loft. I can actually order them online because they make talls and give you the measurements- it's all logical and efficient and whatnot.

@tscheese: Heheh, I had a similar experience in the handbag section of Debenhams (UK Department store). I have a weakness for Radley handbags (those things last FOR.EVER.), but I can usually only wangle them out of my mother for a present, and then usually at the discount outlet near us.

I went in because they started doing leather/canvas bags that were a little cheaper but just as hard-wearing because I desperately needed a new bookbag for Uni. I was WEARING a Radley that - at full retail - was worth more than the majority they had. And the salesperson decided I was too... individual to be seen around their bags and asked me to leave.

I left laughing and called my parents, who were in the mdidle of dropping a rather large amount on new suits in the mens dept for my Dad. They left without the suits and we haven't been back.

@mervbaby: Oh my god, Coldwater Creek. My mom has been receiving that catalog for roughly 45 centuries, and I do not know why. She's never bought anything.

And the DESCRIPTIONS on their products are a fucking hoot. Everything is "spunky, smart, fun!" or "sophisticated sleek and breezy!" And the jarringly young models who look like they're trying to rock these old church lady ensembles. Oh Coldwater Creek.

The worst part is, probably most of my sunday-best ensembles when I was an awkward, hulking teenager TOTALLY came from Coldwater Creek. The giant muu-muu-like floral print dresses with sassy denim vests? Gnngh. That was me, circa 1995.

@mervbaby: @tscheese: Here's the thing: Coldwater Creek is headquartered in Sandpoint, Idaho. It's up in the panhandle and, while a really beautiful place, it's the middle of freaking nowhere and not far from Coeur d'Alene, a known white supremacist hotspot. This is not the liberal, funky part of Idaho. Mark Fuhrmann retired to Sandpoint after the OJ debacle. (It's also the location of my first-ever business trip back in the day, which is why I know all this.)

Frankly, if you think about Coldwater Creek's roots, it's surprising they're as edgy as they are.

@AthertonMerriweather: Ann Taylor Loft isn't bad, really--I have some basics that have lasted FOREVER--but I can't justify paying full price for some of the stuff there. I mean, it's not hideously expensive, but it's just a little much for me.

That and some of their stuff lately is batshit fugly. Like, what in the fuggedy fizz-uck is this?! List price $80!? I love the note of desperation with which it has gone on clearance.

I've been known to shop at both Ann Taylor & Loft, but I haven't found anything I wanted to buy for a price I would pay lately. The ones around me only had a couple suits, for instance, and not ones I'd ever want to wear.
