    Blah, yeah, the commericial is using racial stereotypes. Is it worse than any other commercial? Maybe, maybe not. So many commercials use stereotypes in them. Why, I don't know. I do know I want some Popeye's and this commercial is making me feel guilty about it.

    I thought that ad was racist too when I first saw it.

    BUT Popeyes also has a lot of multi-race commercials, so I won't hold it against them (yanno, the "I know what good is" commercials).


    BTW, the fried chicken stereotype is so not a black stereotype. I mean, northerners think it is, but all southerners love fried chicken. I'm texan. I LOVES ME SOME FRIED CHICKEN. Everyone knows that Popeye's has the best fried chicken. Seriously, ask anyone down south.

    @vulvateen: I know that church's. And love it. Also, there used to be a Hertz's fried chicken around stuebner or kuykehndal and 1960, and that had a buffet that was open for breakfast on the weekends. I was on the north side last week and noticed it closed. :(

    But KFC puts almost all white people in their commercials, so it's not like only black people are shown in the company of fried chicken. Also, Annie's depicted as the "head chef" and there's a white guy in the back of the kitchen. Is KFC breaking ground with their white chef?

    @Mmmmkay is a naughty girl with a bad habit!: Growing up, we had everything as pets--raccoons, foxes, rabbits, turkeys, pigs--you name it and we had it living on the porch at one time or another. But the squirrels were the stupidest pets ever. And that is saying a lot, since the baby turkeys drowned in their own water dish.

    I would really like people to state the reasons they think the commercial is racist. I don't see it, but I'm open to the idea that I just don't understand what makes it racist. One of the blogs mentioned something about tapping her head. Can someone explain why that is racist?

    @Lymed: Is she tapping her weave? Because you can't scratch under a weave, so if it itches sometimes it helps to tap it. But I don't see how this is racist.

    @Lymed: I wouldn't have a problem with this commercial if it was one of many that featured a variety of people, but like I've said below, out of the tens of Popeye's commercials I've seen, they've ALWAYS featured black people. I understand if they're appealing to a local demographic (from New Orleans, a city with a large minority population), but it still seems like they play to stereotypes (southern black ones) in their commercials. ALWAYS.

    @Lymed: My answer to your question: the commercial can be perceived as racist because it relies on very dated sterotypes regarding black women, namely the Mamie stereotype.

    @LibidinousSlut: Tons of white celebrities have weaves. It allows you to quickly change your style/color/length/texture. It also allows looks that would destroy your natural hair from the processing. Basically, same reason some black women get them.

    I'm on the fence about whether or not the commercial is racist. I think the connection between sassy black woman and chicken is dated and its generally tired ass stereotype. Its quite ignorant for companies to rely on dated "mamie" images to sell things to black folk.


    I hate yelling "racist" at anything and everyone but the advertising company probably should have rethought this one. Whoever did the KFC commercials with the white chicken chef should have rethought those too. Both commercials are extremely stupid, 'cause you can sell delicious chicken without stupid commercials.
