In reply to Meet Ponyo, Hayao Miyazaki's Latest Girl-Friendly Film
I adore, no: I revere Miyazaki-san. However, I abhor the English language voiceovers of his films, and I blame Lassiter for this. It diminishes the power of the films when you can clearly identify the actors doing the voices, as in Tonari no Totoro, whose child heroines are voiced by the Fanning sisters, and the father by the devoid-of-emotion Tim Daly (*seething*). I wish I could see Ponyo in Japanese with subtitles rather than hear the English dubbing. If you don't believe it makes a difference, watch Totoro in Japanese 1st and then in English. There is no correspondence between what's going on onscreen and the emotional expression in the voices of the Hollywood stars who dub the version we see in our theaters.

Dagnabbit, I;m so out of touch with anime I'm hearing about this now. I hope that Disney is leaving as much of the movie intact aside from the english track, and that there's a japanese original track on the DVDs.

He just didn't want to work with a male lead again after Howl's Moving Castle -- Christian Bale probably went ape-shit on him.

Wow, I've never heard oabout his movies (they weren't distributed in my neck of the woods), but after seeing the trailer I'll deffinitelly look for his work.

We need more good animated movies for children, instead of the pulp they get today!

A random positive thought for today: Sometimes I'm so grateful for the internet!

@Tu-lip: His stuff is great for kids, and adults too! Princess Mononoke might actually be scary for very young kids (Spirited Away as well, though I'm not sure), but Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Panda Go Panda, and My Neighbour Totoro are all fantastic for kids.

There's also Howl's Moving Castle - I'm not sure where that falls on the younger/older spectrum.

@lijakaca: I vote yes on Spirited Away for kids. Of course it depends on the age and the kid, but I'd put it on par with The Lion King in terms of scariness, and the story is all about a child reonnecting with her parents. It's also my favorite of all his movies. It's breathtakingly beautiful.

Anyone else notice that these Japanese heroines are 'western' looking and exist primarily in animated form? (sigh)

Still looking for strong, smart, and independent female protagonists in Japanese film. Anybody have recommendations? Please no J-horror.

I can't wait for this! His films are so beautifully done and crafted, and this looks like no exception. Sorry, but Studio Ghibli>Disney. Yeah, I said it.

I can't wait! Miyazaki is one of my favorite artists and storytellers bar none. His movies are my go-to whenever I'm feeling sad.

I also defy you to pry the theme song out of your head.

Can't wait to see this with my stepdaughters. We loved his first three movies (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle). The girls in the movie are scared but brave and fierce. They do what they have to do to accomplish their objective. Hooray for another movie!
