Ok, this totally confuses me a bit, because he was already married to her: why untill now, were the autorities waiting for untill the act happened? why not the day of the wedding?
Also, for getting married, did he kidnap the girl or did he have a permission from the parents?
And if the answer it's the later, will the parents face any charges? #raymondjessopconvicted
@not_kinky: She was assigned to his brother, but then given to him. I'm pretty sure the authorities didn't storm their wedding because 1)it's really difficult to gather information about these sects and 2)they probably didn't have an exact date to go in. They received a phone call (that I believe was proven false) that said a 16 year-old was forced to marry an older man and she was being abused by him. They stormed the compound and took all the kids (remember the hullabaloo last year?). They returned most if not all of the children, but storming the compound gave them evidence that these marriages were taking place and thus, the conviction. #raymondjessopconvicted
@Triana Orpheus: Thanks so much, I remember, yes. And then I must suposse that the girl's parents were part of the sect and that's why they gave the girl away and she was not kidnaped?
So the brother of this man is free of charges? #raymondjessopconvicted
@not_kinky: This is the first trial. The legal system in America takes forever, this kind of delay following the raids is completely normal. This conviction is a good sign for the prosecution. #raymondjessopconvicted
@not_kinky: Yes, her parents were part of the sect and gave her away. His brother is Warren Jessop (the infamous "prophet") so her parents probably thought it would be an honor for her to marry him. #raymondjessopconvicted
@colormeroutine: after what Triana said, I guess she may had a clue because she already was the 'wife' for the 'prophet' wich was the criminal's brother. #raymondjessopconvicted
"Up to 20 years in prison" doesn't mean he's actually going to serve 20 years in prison, right? That just means 20 years is the maximum sentence, but he could get less, right? #raymondjessopconvicted
@bluebears: Gross. I thought so. Kind of makes me long for olde-tyme justice. You know, the kind that involved rope and horses. #raymondjessopconvicted
@bluebears: Yeah but this is Texas. We don't F around when it comes to prisons. Just pray he does something stupid like an escape attempt that will extend his sentence to life. #raymondjessopconvicted
@hollygirl: The logical part of my brain is reminding me I cannot endorse prison rape, but at the very least he can get a good taste of what it's like to have no control over your own daily schedule, where you sleep, what you eat, ect. #raymondjessopconvicted
@lolabee: I think the sad truth is that many people receive sentences for the same crime (or worse when you factor in age/violence) which are far less harsh. #raymondjessopconvicted
@mbprice: I don't think this has anything to do with a judge's discretion. The judge hasn't sentenced yet, he can sentence up to 20 years which means that 20 years is likely that statutory limit for the crime. #raymondjessopconvicted
@lolabee: Apparently his home movies were considered so well-made by the international arts community, they started a petition to reduce his sentence! #raymondjessopconvicted
@lolabee: 14 is considered rape of a child in Texas. There is a lesser sentence from 15-17 (age of consent) and then an even lesser sentence for raping an adult woman.
Except I might be wrong and the statutory rape sentence 15-17 might be the shortest. Our laws don't make sense. #raymondjessopconvicted
