    "Funny" story...a young Republican fellow tried to engage me in political conversation on facebook regarding my stance on medical marijuana. By that I mean he attempted to invalidate my argument by making personal attacks regarding my intelligence, profile picture and use of complete sentences. He did not win. Also, I am a bad American.

    @Myrna_Minkoff: I have had men just come up and start talking over me when I'm talking to someone that they want to talk to.

    Example: five minutes ago, was in a conversation with a colleague. Male coworker comes up while I am talking and just starts talking to him, talking over me. It was like nothing that I could possibly be saying could at all matter as much as what a man could say. #politricks

    @morninggloria: What I particularly like is a variation on that: when I say or write something very clearly -- and I know I am being clear, since I write for a living, so it's literally my job to mean what I say -- and the male respondent replies to what he's decided I mean, not what I've actually said.

    For example, a little while ago I was discussing a statutory rape charge on an online forum I frequent. I took the position that however dumb we thought the law was (it was being upheld to punish some 18-year-olds who allegedly had sex with a 16-year-old), if it was on the books and the defendants were found guilty, they should be punished. A guy responded to me, going off about how it was ridiculous that I thought the guys should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, that the prosecutor should use discretion, etc. And this is a forum populated by pretty smart people, in that 99% of them are attending or have graduated from very good colleges.

    But yes, I've gotten firm (some would say rather hostile) about reiterating that I'm speaking if a man talks over me. #politricks

    @Myrna_Minkoff: Aw hell, I work with a couple of men like that. I finally snapped a couple of weeks ago and said, "nope still talking," when one of them interrupted me, he interrupted me again, and I repeated the fact that I was talking. It went on for awhile but by the time he finally let me finish my sentence two co-workers, one female and one male applauded me loudly. Of course I had to be all wacky and comedic about it to keep from hurting his manhood, but it was a semi-win. #politricks

    @Steve Holt's Mother Part Deux: I have tried that technique -- and I got reprimanded for not being "collegial" enough. Same boss also cited me not smiling enough in my annual review.

    So now I'm smiling plenty, and sending a lot of resumes. I'm willing to fight the good fight, but sometimes, you have to admit an environment is toxic and just walk away. #politricks
