And then she said that she likes republicans because they promote being responsible for your own actions, and my head exploded. It's exploding again just thinking about it.

To be honest, it seems more like the republicans (or at least the religious right) use the terms "holding [people] responsible" to basically promote punishing people for their mistakes.
And for violating social norms.
And don't forget the 10 Commandmants and random, otherwise forgettable passages in Leviticus.
There's no sympathy for the so-called sinner, and no empathy, either. It's almost like the non-sinners derive a sense of increased self-worth from watching other people being publicly punished (humiliated, outed, ostracized, etc.) for their transgressions, like at least they're better than that guy...
And my thought here might be more than a little disjointed too, but I sort-of snuck out to court in the middle of writing it.

Little Miss 1% is now 34 years old. We had some very difficult years - a high school drop with a drug/booze problem wasn't anyone's choice for mother of the year. We were so poor.
But - I had a choice. That made a huge difference to me, then and now.

and I say this because my mother was a special education teacher. She taught all ages at public schools and later at state run facilities. I will never forget the toll that working with some of these children took on her, and I will never forget the day that she took me to the nursery section of the state facility...children with severe conditions who would never speak, or hear, or see, or even know what was going on around them, who would be fed through tubes and have their diapers changed and be turned every so often to prevent bed sores --- for their entire lives.
Many had been abandoned by their families, and very few had any visitors save the nurses and teachers who cared for them. I was already pro-choice, but that cemented it.

What they're suggesting is that people should subvert democracy because Palin didn't have an abortion. We're supposed to vote for the person they feel deserves a cookie, not for the person who could do the best job, and if we don't, it's because we're bad people. And these are the ones who claim to have more than a nodding acquaintance with a Bible! Glass houses, people.
