Obama was awesome enough to stay for the whole ceremony and shake the graduates' hands when they received their diplomas. My friend Lola was graduating that year, and she was planning to say, "Tell your wife she kicks ass" as she shook his hand. But when the moment arrived, she looked into his eyes and was like, "asdfkladfidsfsjdkljsf". She really regrets it.

I know I'm not "normal," but I am authentically black. My experience is the black experience of most of my friends, family, and the black people I know. It's just that many people, and I mean white people, black people, whatever, rarely make meaningful relationships with people who are not like them. I'm not talking "work friends " here, I am talking about people who you can go to their house and eat out of their fridge and if they were at your house when you came home from work you wouldn't call the cops.
Unfortunately, there are so few representations of black women in the media that aren't the eye rolling, neck poppin', finger snapping stereotype that Claire Huxtable is the go-to example of "normalcy" that we have. Twenty years, people, no other commonly recognizable black female "role models" in two decades.
Viva Obama.
now back to my drinking...the next 24 hours is going to be rough.

Michelle Obama is a black female role model, and I'm surprised by the resistance to calling her one. It seems to me that it is just as rude to treat Michelle's race as insignificant as it is to treat it as the sole source of her identity. She is a black female role model, but not exclusively. You're allowed to model yourself on her if you're not a black woman. So what's the problem here?

The Obamas are totally the new Huxtables. That's why I can't get enough of the family photos of them. Reminds me of my childhood and the heyday of sitcom TV. They are the best role models for the black family. Just what I'd like to see for myself in the future.

Hopefully as a result of this election more people will begin to understand black people as - gasp! - PEOPLE. Not "other," not deviant - but REAL PEOPLE.
