I understand the need for tiny outfits, same as other gymnastics, but do not get the stripper shoe thing- as long as those are part and parcel, this will never be taken seriously as a sport. #misspoledancesouthamerica2009
@bleedingmouths: I interviewed Miss Pole Dance New South Wales last year and she told me the shoes were good for gripping and also meant you didn't have to constantly force your feet to be pointed. They make your legs look good and help you once you're on the pole. #misspoledancesouthamerica2009
Based on videos I've seen from competitions like this, I'm starting to think it's only the clothes, shoes and context (strip clubs) that make pole dancing different from what acrobats do. #misspoledancesouthamerica2009
This really can be an incredible sport. I've been really disappointed by the comments on the SJ's about this competition over the last few days. These women are clearly incredibly athletic and dedicated to this sport/dance/whatever you want to call it, and labeling them as "wearing slutty clothing," being "co-eds," etc is incredibly demeaning and a much lower level of discourse than I would expect from the commenters on this site. Sure, they're wearing skimpy clothing. Sure, pole dancing is associated with women performing for male pleasure. Sure. That's true. But many forms of dance involve the same sorts of clothing, the same sorts of performance for male pleasure. Olympic sports like volleyball involve skimpy outfits for women. But on a picture of volleyball players, we wouldn't be criticizing the women for their clothing choice, we'd be lauding them for their athletic ability and criticizing the system for their uniforms. In my opinion - disagree if you wish - this should be viewed in the same way. #misspoledancesouthamerica2009
@casi nadie (loves MCC forever): Thank you for this! I participated in the competition last year, and the women were college students, professionals and very educated women who loved the mixture of physicality and dance, and the adrenaline from the dangerous aspects of aerial tricks, and the female-positive community. Also, you CANNOT wear anything but skimpy outfits - if you're up in the air hanging by your thighs 15 feet off the ground and flipping around, you need the friction and grip of skin - NOT slippery fabric. That's a good way to seriously injure yourself.
So, you are hearted - thank you for your thoughtful post on this because I've been very frustrated about the snotty, judgmental comments on the pole SJs. #misspoledancesouthamerica2009
@casi nadie (loves MCC forever): Well put. I have occasionally come in and commented about the pole dancing class I took at a gym, which did really amazing things for my muscle tone. I absolutely loved it. Sure, we wore skimpy clothing but it was a very woman positive environment, with a range of body types in the class. And while pole dancing may have it's origins in seedy strip clubs, how can you look at that photo and not be amazed at the strength it takes to do that? #misspoledancesouthamerica2009
@casi nadie (loves MCC forever): A friend of mine enrolled in a pole-dancing class, and while I mocked her constantly about it, I went with her once as her guest (you know, when gyms let their members take somebody along for a few classes to attract more people) and I couldn't keep up. I ended up full of bruises where I never had bruises before (and I'm tragically pale and bruise-prone anyway), every muscle ached, and it required enormous strength and athletic capability. Before, while I could see that it had an acrobatic aspect that I thought would be the most difficult thing, I had no idea that it was so physically demanding. Needless to say, I never went back, just because it was so darn exhausting (high-impact activities are not really my friends) #misspoledancesouthamerica2009
My first thought before I read the caption was that she was a competitive swimmer for the Argentine national team or something. Shows where my head is. #misspoledanceargentina
@CarlinaZeikfried: These aren't strippers (or maybe some of them are, but that's beside the point, and even then I wouldn't be so judgemental as to call a stripper a slut), they're athletes performing some insane feats that require a ton of strength and are very dangerous. Have you ever watched pole dance at this level, or tried pole dancing that's not just about ass shaking? I suggest you check out some youtube videos of professional level dancing before slinging names. #misspoledanceargentina
OK, I know I should be paying attention to the pole dancer/Holocaust museum juxtaposition, but really all this photo did was make me miss Buenos Aires.
@labeled: Have you done pole dancing before? It's one of the most physically challenging activities I've ever done, and I've run a marathon, done ballet and played tennis...And, it is fun because when you get to those levels it's less about sexy sexy strip routines (actually, I never had any class like that) and more about amazing acrobatic skills. #misspoledancesudameria
@labeled: Whoa, I missed that article before. My class and the competition were nothing like that. It was more about strength, technique, and doing more and more difficult tricks. I can see how that article would turn someone off pole. #misspoledancesudameria
How could this photo happen? I was so careful. I picked the wrong sign, the wrong competition, the wrong photographer. Where did I go right? #misspoledancesudameria
This picture summarizes popular culture: a bunch of attractive co-eds with very little self awareness doing strip routines near a genocide museum. #misspoledancesudameria
I'm down with pole dancing when it seems to be more inspired by fun on the monkey bars than a need to flash a #sexyface. They all look like they're having fun, and I am in awe of the lady with the pink #cuteshoes and her clearly superior upper body strength. #misspoledancesudameria
