    I tell ya. The people at PetCo were all "This purple and orange paisely pup goes with eh-vree-thang," and I was all, "I just don't know!" and they were all "DO IT!" So I was all "Okay!" and then I got the thing home and what do you know -- it totally didn't go with my red, pink, and turquoise space dyed pillow shams! Obviously, the dog had to go!!

    People who think they really want a dog should just foster. That way, you get to have a dog, but once you tired, you can give it back or the dog gets adopted. It's like shopping with a great return policy. (Yes, I totally Elle-Woods that analogy)

    To British kids, Simon Cowell is more famous than god. That's kind of like my friend's sister who was watching the super bowl with me that time, asked me who that old guy was on stage, and when I said "Paul McCartney", she said "whooo's THAT? couldn't they have gotten someone more FAMOUS??"

    Well, I'd already "reeled in" my husband before we got pregnant, but what surprises me are the low expectations that many people have for an expectant father. Almost that they need to be dragged or tricked into participating in the prenatal experience. Anything my husband does is glorious in the eyes of the ob/gyn nurses, even when he just shows up for an appointment and listens.

    @mrsryan: a girlfriend of mine just had a baby, and in her blog she keeps gushing about how her husband changes the baby's diaper, gets up to feed him in the middle of the night, etc. isn't that called being a father? i'm hoping it's just mushy pregnancy hormones because...if my husband knocked me up, he'd BETTER help out with the kid. just sayin'.

    I used to work in a vet's office, and some of the situations I witnessed there were absolutely terrible. One of the hard truths that vets have to learn, especially in 24-hour emergency clinics, is that people will bring in perfectly healthy animals and demand that they be put down.


    I got chewed out once for trying to convince an owner to put her cat in the shelter rather than have us put it down. People make me sick.

    @Jessica Hussein Lovejoy loves Decapitatey Wayne Peterson: Thanks for the vid! It made me crack up. I love how, the more the older brother hurts, the more Charlie laughs and smiles. And also, how even though the older kid knew Charlie would bite him, he stuck his finger back in his mouth for a second go-round. Gotta love kids.

    When will people realize that pets are people too? They are like toddlers and look to their "person" for all the basics. If you aren't willing to put in the time, patience, love and discipline that a dog needs, don't get a damn dog!

    @beastybeatsy: It's not a distinctly British phenomenon. In the US people come up with crazy excuses, but in this climate it generally boils down to "I'm losing my home or can't afford to care for this dog and it breaks my heart, but I'm too embarrassed to tell you that."

    @PinkSoxHat: I certainly can't speak for the whole country, but in the small town vet's office where I used to work, I found it was frequently the poorer owners who would sacrifice more to save their animals. One client was losing his home, and yet still spent hundreds (thousands?) of dollars trying to save his beloved dog. It was the richer clients who generally complained more about every single bill.


    Of course, I don't mean to generalize. We got some pretty amazing and pretty awful representatives from all income brackets.

    @NakedGills: For serious. There was an article in Willamette Week, the local alt paper here in Portland, about the economy's effect on pet owners, and a lot of it centered on a woman who was shelling out hundreds of dollars every month for her dog while working two low-wage jobs and couch surfing.

    @PinkSoxHat: At the shelter I volunteer at, most owners are turning over pets because they've lost jobs and can't pay for their care, or they've lost their homes and can't take their pets into the rental properties they have to move to. It's a damn good thing they don't let volunteers do intake, though, because if someone came through those doors with a precious animal and relinquished it to the shelter because it didn't match the furniture? I would cut a bitch.
