This was my favorite book. I memorized all the words at 4 and learned to read it at 5. Massively important to me.

    SQUEE!

(Not particularly useful, but the only response I have to this book and all my childhood favorites!)

    I wikipedia-ed it and I found this:

In a 1999 survey conducted by Pizza Hut, George W. Bush listed the book among his favorite books from when he was growing up. This caused some controversy among media commentators since Bush was twenty-three when the book was first published.[3][4] Bush has also chosen the book to read to elementary school classes.[

There is, of course, only one suitable response to anything concerning the The Very Hungry Caterpillar:

It's not showing a special exhibit of his work, it's the Eric Carle museum! And he still lives (at least part time) in Western Mass. He has an office across the street from my dad.

"I'm very happy," he says. "In fact, I told my wife I've never been so happy."

This is how life should be. It makes me happy knowing someone who has brought so much joy to the lives of children and adults is enjoying life too.

This book always makes me weepy when I read it to my baby sister as a teenager, now it'll make it doubly so when I one day read it to my own children (some far off day in the future).

I love you Eric Carle. You saved my butt my first year of teaching. When my well of ideas for keeping a dozen five year olds with autism engaged ran dry I could always count on a Carle book to keep the peace.

Also, I am totally a Very Grouchy Ladybug, just not around the kids.

@disco2000: My mom brought all my old children's books to my baby shower a couple weeks ago and I have done nothing but squee over then ever since. Of course The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar is one of them.

@deltabella: My nursery has a "Where The Wild Things Are" theme, with a fantastic print over the crib. I have almost all his books.

@disco2000: You don't have to wait until you're a mom to read children's books. I re-started reading them when I was 15 because the school art teachers said it was a way to discover contemporary art.

This book was one of my absolute favorites as a child and it was a joy to rediscover it when teaching preschool. The kids would all laugh and squeal with delight as they heard all the kinds of foods that the caterpillar ate, and I'm glad Carle knows the kind of joy his book brought to so many children.
