I had a cap that I wrote "M.E. plus M.J." on.
Great album!

What do you think? What is your favorite Michael dance moment?
06/26/09
Yes I'm putting "Smooth Criminal" above "Thriller." Was a show but "Smooth Criminal" and the lean had moves few people can copy.

That being said I have been so frustrated that the death of ONE flawed person has been so examined, debated, mourned and celebrated in one day. I have seen very few conversations in the general media about the monster that society created in MJ.
All coverage of Iran has virtually ground to a halt everywhere(I know, I know OT). This was passed on to me today:
1000 people will die today from addiction (a disease he suffered from according to him)
at least 17 people died yesterday in Iran
90 people will die today at their own hand
3 women will be killed today by their intimate partners.
I am just sayin.

I'm not sure that anyone is saying that those things aren't something horrible and sad. I think people are sad about MJ for a variety of reasons; it's realizing your own mortality when someone who seems so larger than life dies, his popularity spanned generations (I listened to him at 7, my mom's first concert was the Jackson 5, my parents met when my dad played PYT for my mom) not to mention the fact that he's not just an AMERICAN pop icon, he's a GLOBAL pop icon. And because he had such a huge, long career, his music became the soundtrack to so many people's lives. Irrespective of whether or not you really know someone, inviting someone's music into your life through repeated listening becomes something personal and deep. And that is why people are so touched by this.

His music effected me as well. I remember getting goosebumps and crying the first time I heard "Man in the Mirror". I remember being so confused by the trial he faced and learning so much about celebrity from that.
My point was simply this, that one of the great things he wanted to do was heal the world. In his life he wanted to help people and wanted us to go back to a more innocent time. Should that not be celebrated and honored?
24 hours straight in this news cycle have been devoted to this. Wouldn't he want us shining light on other things as well? Doesn't his legacy indicate that we should be releasing balloons in solidarity with Iran rather than speculating about his children's custody?
No one here is mourning an actual person. Only ideas, musical notes and feelings.

I can't get enough of PYT right now. At LEAST 15 times today... :)

It is exactly how I felt as a child listening to Thriller and imaging my shiny matching gloved wedding ceremony to the King of Pop. And despite what he fell into, that is what I lost yesterday, the innocence of youth.

I don't know if this is bad or not, but my first thought when I heard about his death was "at least he is out of his misery." By all accounts, he had a very sad and tragic life. Rest in Peace.

I'm just thinking about what that did to him as a person, what it did to his psyche. There's no precedent, so how could he have even gotten help for his problems when there's no way any psychiatrist or psychologist could be trained to handle his situation?

Calling up the radio station on the rotary phone, begging them to play "Thriller" again, even though they had played it not ten minutes ago.
Going to a friend's house to watch "The Making of Thriller" special on MTV because we didn't have cable.
Buying a silver glove at Claire's that I would only wear in the privacy of my room.
Sigh.

Thank you for a lifetime of entertainment and some of the greatest fucking dance songs EVER, Michael. May you rest in peace, dear boy.

Goddamn, he could dance. Easily the best ever. Timberlake and Usher learned all they know from MJ, and yeah, they're talented, but MJ was just unreal. Unbelievable. If anyone'd like to see something cool, Slate has a "Goodnight,Moonwalk" compilation video today that's just adorable. A happy note, kinda. Anyway, the man was a true icon. I hope he has finally found peace, and in a sad sort of way I'm happy for him.

I still treasure those memories, and the music that accompanies those moments.

I seriously had to call her mother and ask if she was ok.

@franimaljones: My best friend and I were convinced that once we finished law school and MLS school, we were going to make enough moeny to fly ANYWHERE to see Michael live at least once. Now it'll never happen.
