I am not, nor will I ever be a Tennessee fan (my heart belongs to the ACC), but Pat Summitt is a woman deserving of our admiration. She's one of the few NCAA coaches whose names I know, and that's saying something.
I also love that she's proof that success in coaching is not contingent upon being an asshole. Class can win. Eat that, Bobby Knight.
I'm just thrilled her historic victory also meant DEFEAT for the University of Georgia.
@not.a.clever.name: Real ACC? Or fake ACC? I went to an UNC and went to both the women's and men's basketball games against Duke when I was a senior. The women's was more fun because our seats were closer, even though we lost. Then Tyler Hansbrough got his nose broken at the men's game. By the way, when I say fake ACC I mean BC, VA Tech, Miami, and Florida State. Even Maryland and Clemson are afterthoughts in this state.
I don't know much about basketball, but this is a very cool story. I like how she does seem committed to shaping the entire student-athlete.
(Though could someone give me a really good reason why it's not obnoxious as hell to put "Lady" in front of nearly all of the women's HS/college teams?)
@liz.lemonade: It's *totally* obnoxious to put the "Lady" moniker in front of women's sports teams. It smacks of nothing but old school sexism. I know that Vanderbilt University calls their women's teams simply the "Commodores", and they will correct people who call them the "Lady Commodores".
So I'm a UK fan, and therefore do not see my endorsement of Pat Summitt as an endorsement of the Vols. That is an amazing accomplishment and I've heard that the Lady Vol games are better attended that the Men's games, which is just icing on the cake.
@p0rt3r: I don't have a super-reliable source, but according to them, it was just the last few games this season. I'm not claiming a general trend (I know the men on average get over 300,000 fans and the women get about 230,000). I'll see if I can find anything to back me up.
I'm sick with a flubug, PMSing, and this has reduced me to a teary mess because I'm just.so.happy for her.
She's an awesome person, and as much as I hate Tennessee (fuck Rocky Top!), I have to respect a school that's thrown so much support behind women's sports.
I heard about this yesterday on my local unabashedly misogynistic guilty pleasure morning radio show. I was impressed, they didn't even say anything remotely sexist, just respectful...and then I wondered where the Jezebel post was. Hooray it's here!
This lady sounds pretty awesome...not being a sports fan, I'd never heard of her.
I was watching SportsCenter the other day and they were talking about this. They were wondering how long it would be until a men's coach surpassed her and made cracks about how it wasn't really a significant record because women's teams are easier to beat or something. The completely overt sexism that was being portrayed was enough to make me not want to watch anymore.
@Hazel: But even using their logic that's idiotic if women's teams are easier to beat then that goes both ways, hurting summit as much as helping her. Well I guess sexism is never logical.
Man when I was young and super into basketball I wanted to play college and play for Summit, I read all of her books. She is just amazing and has coached some of the finest WNBA players.
@Hazel: Even if ESPN is a bunch of sexist morons they should still realize that it will be impossible for a male coach to meet this number, mostly because of how impossible it is to be named head coach of a men's basketball team by age 22. If a man gets 1,000 victories, it will take much longer and he'll be much older. I'm a woman and even I get that, you simpering assclowns.
Also, one thing I loved about her coaching style is that she demands that her athletes do well in school. I think the average lady Vol. basketball player GPA was a 3.6 or something insanely high!

Incidentally: Summit was described in last week's Time magazine as the "winningest" coach - did I miss this becoming an actual word?
