My parents are Vietnamese refugees, so I don't have a tremendous amount of material to draw from. My mom is also a very modest person and as far as I can tell, never thought too highly of her looks.

That being said, I have this fabulous picture of my mom at a picnic in the early 70s--mini skirt, cute top, and sunglasses included. My parents didn't have a happy marriage, but for whatever reason I like to assume this picture was one my dad took of her when they were dating. #mymomthestyleicon

Scrolling through that site brought tears to my eyes. People are beautiful! I can't really articulate why old photos of people's moms touched me like it did. #mymomthestyleicon

I don't know much about my mother's style - most of the photos pre-children are head and shoulders - but she had the most glorious mane of golden brown hair. Shiny, wavy, shampoo commercial hair that I wanted so much.

Instead I got my father's color and much tighter ringlets from...somewhere. #mymomthestyleicon

There's a great picture of my mom in the seventies that I just LOVE. Her hair was really blonde at that time and she's shot in profile with these giant sunglasses on her head. She looks so effortless and cool.

Not so cool? Her red, white, and blue prom dress, with matching shawl. #mymomthestyleicon

I am so glad my mom gave up the mini skirts and hooker heels she wore when I was a child. #mymomthestyleicon

@Tippi Hedren: @Tippi Hedren: My mom still rocks the hooker heels, mini skirts, low-cut leopard print blouses and has now added a pimp cane (she has back pain) to her repertoire of awesomeness.

Embarrassed the hell out of me when I was younger, but now I admire the 'to hell with what other people think' attitude. #mymomthestyleicon

Do Quacker Factory sweaters make the cut?

Although, I do love this one picture from my parents' wedding in 1969 when they got hitched with about $1.05 in bank - it's basically my mom rocking a white minidress (the only white she owned) out front of a Catholic church. It's pretty bad ass. #mymomthestyleicon

Have we ever done a Jezebel mom picture post? Because I have some AWESOME pics of my mom and grandma. My grandma was the quintessential Betty Draper except with cat eye glasses. My mom was tall and thin and wore her hair long and road horses and smiled all the time. #mymomthestyleicon

@Zombie Ms. Skittles: My mum rocked an awesome 80s perm with some shoulder-padded sweaters right before she had my sister and I, but before that she had wicked long center-parted hair that she ironed straight. I'm glad we have straighteners now. #mymomthestyleicon

You know what I keep now? A logbook of dreams. And it's probably the creepiest thing you have ever read. Essentially the main theme is me running for my life.

I read my old diary recently. I started it around 10 and stopped around 13..maybe an entry or two at 14. Wow. Here is one entry:

We had pizza for dinner so I said "I love tomatoes" and Jason said "so do I" !!!!!!!!!

Apparently I thought that was prima facie evidence that he was in love with me. Turns out, not so much.

I threw out my diaries from high school (seriously, who wants to remember THAT?) but I *DO* remember one I got as a present -- no idea what happened to it. It was a black book with black pages you could doodle on with the SILVER GELLY ROLL PEN that came with it. I went to London and wrote for the whole time about how much I missed my crush, Mikey.

Unfortunately all my old diaries got lost in the various moves both myself and my parents have undertaken in the last decade. I do remember writing down massive amounts of weird gossip though--who liked who, and whatnot. I think I even wrote a list of all the boys in my class along with their pros and cons when I was about 11. Very embarassing stuff in retrospect!

I may have to take part in this. My journal scribblings were some of the most passive-aggressive, hateful little rantings to ever pour forth from a preteen's hands. I read them and marvel over the fact that I turned into such a relatively decent adult.

I had a ninth grade teacher give us an assignment to write ourselves a letter in the future. lo and behold I got a letter five years later that stated ''You better have long hair like Mariah Carey" and "if you have a boyfriend he better be FINE"!
Needless to say it was the most entertaining letter ever and in the best way proved I have not changed one bit!
