I would have been more impressed if Michelle had worn an Alaia to the Met Museum instead of the Met Opera House. It would have been like sticking it to the man after Alaia not being included in the Model's show.

I've always preferred the Kelly to the Birkin. It's more tailored. (Not that I will ever own either, although I do have a vintage bag that is a vague knock-off of the Kelly).

@nessalicious: It's about the history, luxury, and tradition with Hermes. Aesthetically, they might not be your thing...but there's the hand-stitching, craftmanship, made-to-order, customization etc. is the stuff of legends.

@IrockIroll: I know about the background of Hermes, but the Birkin, to me is just such a yawnsome bag. I'd much prefer to have one of their amazing custom made bags, did you ever see the one they made to hold an apple? It was amazing.

@bleedingmouths: I agree, sometimes you can love the background but hate the item. I find this true with a lot of fashion designers and looks. I especially dislike the look of a YSL 'le smoking' but I understand that it was a beautiful and revolutionary outfit but god it's unflattering!

@dreamweave: Yeah ... I'm trying to justify by thinking of the nice old French leather workers in the Hermes factory (I assume they're nice, old and French, anyway) she's single-handedly supporting with her habit ... but hmm, still not so sure about this being an efficient use of resources.

Perhaps she could keep buying 'em, but then auction off one a month and donate the dough to struggling fashion students/soccer leagues for disadvantaged youth/some other apropos and deserving charity ... that would be a cool recessionista move.

(Oops. I forgot the ban on words ending in -ista.)

That may have been a particularly well-made piece, but when you are in the store it is so obvious that the quality and materials are poor and cheap. It never looks good in the store! H&M fares better, especially with their jackets, but Target is always especially awful I think, even the Go lines.

Who ARE these people? Target clothes are decent and wearable, but how can you fail to notice the quality and drape of fabric, the quality of the cut, the tailoring and finishing, etc? There is often little quality difference between basic nicer stuff (like a dress in the $140 - $200 range) and comparable designs from designers for several times the amount, but anyone who knows anything about clothes can tell the difference between a nice piece and a $40 dress from Target.

@small-fox: I think it can range quite wildly at Target. I've gotten some stuff from the GO collection that is quite decent (I have a few designer things that I got from eBay to compare them too) while other designers are pretty poor quality. They even vary wildly within a collection. I wasn't into the Thakoon collection so I didn't even bother to go look, but for example the McQueen stuff was almost astonishingly poorly made for the price (REALLY skimpy fabric) which sucks because I was totally looking forward to McQ.

@cwisto moweina has got yer goat: This American Life has a great episode on how collective push for developing countries to improve their working conditions can be a win-win situation for getting inexpensive clothing to market made by workers in good conditions (it cited Thailand). But of course US trade policies messed it all up so the market moved on to cheaper countries with shitty worker protections.

Does anyone else love the Target handbags the way I do? I like pretty bags, but not enough to spend over $50-60 on them. I have a pretty brown canvas with white leather accent Rafe bag from two years ago that still looks great, and a black pleather-y Anya Hindmarch bag from fall 08 that I constantly get complimented on. I love the looks on people's faces when I tell them I got it at Target.

Personally, I prefer to just scour the racks or go on Ebay for deals. Some of these lines have prices that I consider too high for the quality of the fabrics. Like this (130 dollar I think...jacket) You could find something on sale for that price, that also won't be instantly recognizeable as one of the Go! lines pieces.

See, I always get really excited looking at the Target stuff online, but when I'm actually looking at them in the store the fabrics and colors are off and the quality not that great. I wish this weren't the case!

@fulanita: same. I have about 5 cute work sweaters and 2 work pants that are nice enough in a pinch (cost 20 bucks) but all in all I think the poor quality shows up in the bad tailoring and cheap materials.
