I am thinking they choose red for weddings because white is a mourning color.

what's the significance of the red for the majority of the dresses? what does that color represent for pakistanis?

@msAnthrope: I think it is a lucky color, and signifies birth and celebration. White is for mourning, and bright colors-- jewel tones-- are really popular in Pakistan. Also, since it is a Muslim country, black is usually reserved for Shia muslims. Also, lavender is used for mourning a child, and saffron/orange for holy men. Even though Pakistan is technically Muslim, there are still a lot of Hindu type symbols embedded in the culture, like the usage of these colors.

I went to so many weddings when I was in Pakistan. It's neat in Indian and Pakistani culture; weddings aren't an exclusive invite only like they are here. The more the merrier to them, and oftentimes there will be hundreds/thousands of people-- and I never had an experience where I felt like an interloper or crasher. THey always made you feel so welcome.

I've also always thought the Indian/Pakistani custom of wearing red and gold as a bride was/is much more flattering than our poofy white deals. I would do it myself if it didn't feel kind of silly to be appropriating Indian culture as a non-Indian woman.

@Laulau: @NellMood: Oh yeah, I definitely am considering red. But I guess I meant the whole sari and gold bangles look. PLus I am just doing a really small courthouse wedding (mostly to get on my BF's insurance!) so the idea of getting dressed up super fancy is kind of funny/silly. But, I may just do it for shits and giggles. Or giggles and blowjobs, as it were.

@margareita metermaid: pakistanis dont really wear saris to their own weddings though, they wear ghararas or lehngas, which are essentially voluminous skirts. also, i agree with you, i thik the red and gold is ace

@margareita metermaid: I went on a field trip to the DC mosque with my Arabic class and there was a wedding about to start as we left...the bride and groom asked our entire class to stay because (at least in the type of Islam they practiced, I don't know how universal this is) the more people who witnessed the wedding, the more valid it was in the eyes of Allah. I sort of liked that idea. Plus, you know, free food. It was a very very simple ceremony...we all sat on the floor in a circle around the bride and groom and the whole thing took about five minutes. They seemed so happy that we were there.

@mwaussie: Was this the mosque on Mass Ave, just before the bridge over Rock Creek? That's awesome that the couple were so welcoming. The one time I went to visit (I just wanted to see what it was like), people were really unfriendly.

@Laulau: Yep, the Islamic Cultural Center. I've never had anyone question me being there, I just sort of stroll in. Shoes off, pretty scarf on my head, no worries. It's too bad you had an unfriendly experience, I've always had a great time there. They have a great little library and the imam (time permitting) will sit down and chat with anyone who comes in.

@mwaussie: I was also all covered up, but part of the discomfort could have been my failure to realize that there was a "ladies only" section. Behind those ugly wooden dividers! Lovely to hear the imam is so obliging. (I used to love having a view of the minaret from my old apt.)
