@Smitros: I'm no expert, but I'd guess it would mean you were so put off by that one ad where they showed a girls' crotch covered in a white thong and you could see a wet spot that you decided AA was not for you.

I went into an American Apparel because I reeeeally needed a bathing suit (which I haven't own since high school because I always get too stabby shopping for one before I can actually purchase one). However, their bathing suits were even MORE expensive and MORE stupid looking that usual ones, plus I couldn't bear to give money to Dov. So I got one at Sears.

Meh, I really like American Apparel clothes, excluding all the shiny crap. I don't get the hatred on the actual clothes, they are ethically produced, PLAIN, comfortable and really long lasting.

I have a bunch of dresses/tshirts/socks etc and love them all.

Seriously, the double u-neck short sleeved dress in black is HOTTT.

But also I do not have a problem with the advertising. More sexy, non-model sized girls please! I love how you can actually see girls with cellulite modeling clothes on the AA website.

@littlebambi: I tend to agree. It's nice to see the different models showing the clothes because I can see, hey that girl has some curves and bulges similar to mine. And that girl still thinks (and others seem to agree) that she is sexy. I dunno, in a strange way, it makes me feel like my imperfect body is sexy too. I generally loathe all things hipster, but they do seem to appreciate many body types.

Even this sweaty mf'r may not be able to weasel his way through this year. Financing is the very devil, especially on this scale, and things that flew in years past (even difficult times) will not fly now. We've only seen the tip of the iceberg, and 18 months from now will be a good indicator of who had their shit together and who didn't. You can coast on momentum for a time, but momentum is no longer enough.

I always got they used sex - and way too much of it - to sell their clothes, but the other day I almost shit my pants over one of their ads. It was a 14-year-old girl (my best guess at her actual or presumed age) topless with her back turned, fishnets, and short shorts sticking her ass in the air and looking coyly over her shoulder. The ad was on facebook and only showed the AA logo at the last shot. I understand sex sells, but kiddie porn? REALLY? Is that even legal?

After seeing that ad, I had almost the same reaction after seeing the film Monster, and that's saying a lot.

It's interesting how 'counter-culture' stores like AA aren't doing horribly.

Urban Outfitters is still bringing in sales but that may be due to my need to shop there incessantly. Whatevs, I got nice clothes.

@Jessi Ramsey: The Gap has been down for a loooong time, though. I think that the main reason that The Gap is doing so poorly is because they don't really have a target market - or at least, they didn't for a long time. They try to cater to everyone and end up catering to no one. AA on the other hand definitely has a target market.

I work at the head office of a large clothing retailer and I'm just waiting for people to start running around like chickens with their heads cut off :/

@andheartss haz it: In respects to Urban, their clothing/ accessories/ etc are unlike anything most people can get in many areas without going to an insanely expensive boutique. Is it important to spend on nice basics? Yes, and that's how The Gap made their money in the 90s. Unfortunately, fashion trends are rarely about basics, and that's one of the theories as to why these stores have declining sales.

Also, never underestimate the purchasing power of the trust fund hippie.
