But, there were plenty of snubs and surprises.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button took the lead with 13 nominations, followed by Slumdog Millionaire with 10. But even with so many nominations, none of the actors from Slumdog were nominated. The actors from Revolutionary Road were similarly shut out, with no nominations for Kate Winslet, or Leonardo DiCaprio, though Kate did get a best actress nomination for her role in The Reader. While Milk was snubbed at the Golden Globes, it received four Oscar nominations in big categories. Though the Globes had many wacky supporting actor nominations for films like Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder, Oscar's only quirky nomination was Robert Downey Jr. for his role as an Australian actor who plays a black man and winds up taking home the Oscar. Could life imitate the art that is Tropic Thunder? Below, a complete list of the nominees.

The nominees for best picture are "Frost/Nixon," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Milk," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Reader."

The nominees for best actor are Sean Penn ("Milk"), Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon"), Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler"), Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor") and Brad Pitt ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button").

The nominees for best actress are Kate Winslet ("The Reader"), Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married"), Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), Angelina Jolie ("Changeling") and Melissa Leo ("Frozen River").

The nominees for best supporting actor are Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight"), Josh Brolin ("Milk"), Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Tropic Thunder") and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Doubt").

The nominees for best supporting actress are Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona"), Amy Adams ("Doubt"), Viola Davis ("Doubt"), Taraji P. Henson ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") and Marisa Tomei ("The Wrestler").

The nominees for best director are David Fincher ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire"), Gus Van Sant ("Milk"), Ron Howard ("Frost/Nixon") and Stephen Daldry ("The Reader").

The nominees for best animated feature are "WALL-E," "Kung Fu Panda" and "Bolt."

The nominees for best original screenplay are "In Bruges," "WALL-E," "Frozen River," "Milk" and "Happy-Go-Lucky."

<![CDATA[Oscar Noms 2008: Women Can Write, Not Direct]]> The Oscar ceremony may not happen this year, but the nominations themselves, just announced, prove that women are making inroads as writers. In addition to actress noms for Cate Blanchett (for both I'm Not There and Elizabeth: The Golden Age) and Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Laura Linney, and Ellen Page, the Best Original Screenplay category was female-dominated, with 4 out of the 5 nominated films boasting women writers (an additional writing nod was given to Sarah Polley for Best Adapted Screenplay for I'm Not There). Interestingly (and not surprisingly), not a single Best Director nomination went to a woman; are women just not being given the opportunity to direct by the Hollywood establishment? Or are their efforts just not being recognized? Contemplate this while checking out the full list of nominees, after the jump.
