@missbhavens: No, not at all. Nominating foreign films and foreign actors in major categories would highlight that a lot of them are superior to the homegrown product. Whenever I get cranky about the banality of the picks, I have to remember that the Academy Awards are first and foremost a marketing tool.

In regard to Heath Ledger, one of the downsides to his death is that if you're an actor after your last movie is made, that's pretty much it. There's not really any such thing as posthumously released material in the vein of Tupac.

I'm so, so glad that The Dark Knight didn't get nominated for Best Picture. Other than Ledger as the Joker, I hated every second of it.

I'm glad Milk is getting nominated. Great movie with great performances. Same for In Bruges.

Winslet's a good, competent actress, but really no great shakes. Leo doesn't do it for me- I have to wonder if their appeal is so how locked into their 90s (Titanic/R&J/Grape/Sense) roles and not the middle of the road work they do now.

@CassetteLove: I love Kate Winslet for just about everything I've ever seen her in., starting with Heavenly Creatures... Little Children was really great. She even made The Holiday watchable. And she's a total babe and very charming... especially in Extras. I admit I have a girlcrush. Haven't seen her latest two but I fully plan on it once they get released in theaters where I live.

I'm glad Milk got some nominations, after the GG snub - it's my best picture of the year, for sure. Also Penn should win best actor, and Van Sant best director - although it probably won't win anything.

I saw I've Loved You So Long last night and the fact that Kristin Scott Thomas did not get nommed for best actress is a travesty - a travesty, I tell you! Having seen all the other performances, bar Melissa Leo, I think she makes them all look like daytime TV in comparison. Seriously.

@Perla: i've read the synopsis, i know how it ends, and i'm sure it's a great movie, but the trailer for the film isn't doing it any favors. somehow, clint eastwood gives an "amazing performance" playing an elderly man telling kids to get off his lawn. elderly men have been doing that for decades...actors or not...so how is that somehow "amazing"?

'benjamin button' was like forrest gump in reverse, except forrest gump was a better movie. that's right, i said it. cate blanchett aside (who is always the best thing in whatever she's in), i found 'button' to be an exercise in special effects. the lead character wanders around and i feel nothing for him. another male fantasy flick. get younger as you get older, have no responsibilities and just wander around. that's the movie in one sentence.

@rednrowdy: Totally Agree! I could not get the Forrest Gump connection out of my head while watching Benjamin Button. My main issue with Benjamin Button was that he seemed to exist in a vacuum-he was living through some pretty historically significant times, and all that happened was an explosion in the Pacific? What I liked about Forrest Gump was that Forrest and Jenny were two different people living lives in their historical context. I felt like Benjamin Button was, as you said an exercise in special effects and a sappy love story. But, Cate Blanchett was, as always, amazing.

@the dodo, the cuckoo, and the nene: aside from his weird aging thing, the audience gives you no information about his actual personalities - what his likes and dislikes are, his favorite candy..nothing! he's just this dude wandering around. i'm sure the movie was supposed to make me cry and be really touching, but it didn't work on me. didn't shed a tear. the character was too cold and distant for me to care about him.

I loved Rourke in Wrestler. Pathos, charm and so gritty.

Ledger was so dark and subversive and nightmarishly good. Really delighted that Downey Jr. got a nod too. (not just because he's a dreamboat...) and loved Waltz with Bashir. The animation was beautiful and the story needed to be told.

So many good films, I feel like a 6-year(or actually a 26) old Hanny in a sweetshop.

I'm really pulling for Viola Davis. She was fantastic in Doubt.

As much as I like him, I can't pull for Brad Pitt. Not with Sean Penn, Frank Langella and Mickey Rourke nominated. The best actor category is hard to pick a fave in.

Also, can we let David Fincher win, even though Benjamin Button wasn't that good? The man directed "Vogue" & "Express Yourself" for Madonna, "Janie's Got A Gun" for Aerosmith, and "Straight Up" for Paula Abdul. He's awesome.

@SuperRounder: Shiiiit, he directed 'Janie's Got a Gun'? That was an awesome video. I think he was criminally overlooked for 'Zodiac'. Which probably means he'll win for BB due to the academy's bizarro pattern of awarding people for the movie that came AFTER the truly amazing movie that they should have won for but didn't. Poster child: Russell Crowe in 'Gladiator'. He should have won for 'The Insider'.

Whatever anyone's opinion of slumdog millionaire is, one has to admit the acting was hardly remarkable. The film itself, the cinematography, the location, the music, the story etc these are what made it so popular. The acting was fairly average, particularly in terms of the adult roles, if anything the children actors were miles better. Dev Patel is adorable and Freida Pinto is gorgeous, but neither of them are award-worthy. You can't just nominate people because you like them....

Love seeing Richard Jenkins' name in the nominations. I don't think he has a real chance of winning and I was not a fan of the The Visitor, but maybe this will bring more good roles his way.
