Why can't she just freaking use a pump, why does it have to come straight from the tit? Is the "nutritional value" lost in pumping or something? Also was the dad interviewed in this segment? I'd really like his feelings on the matter.
It really annoys me when parents defend (fill in the blank) by saying, "Little Timmy doesn't mind so I don't see the problem!" Well Little Timmy probably doesn't mind alot of things like ice cream before bed or swimming in the pool un-supervised but that doesn't make him an expert on what is reasonable, safe, or healthy for him.
And as far as naked family time, if you grew up with free spirit hippie parents who were cool with that then I'm cool with that too but there are still certain things that aren't okay once a certain age is hit. For example, kids need to sleep in their own beds not only due to studies that have proven how important this is so they don't grow dependent on their parent's as a security blanket, etc but men get boners sleeping whether they are having sex dreams or not and Little 8-12yr old Annie doesn't need to be asking her dad if that's a banana in his boxers or if he's just happy she's waking him up in the middle of the night b/c she doesn't want to sleep by herself.
@littlebunnyfoofoo: I need to go watch my DVR'd episodes of Little Britain now because that guy's voice is all I hear when I see that screen cap above.
All the making out is what got me pregnant in the first place. I don't think I'll have any desire to re-create that while I'm pushing a watermelon out my vagina. Do you know what 10 cm dilated looks like??
@BlondeGrlz is having a BlondeBoyz!: I'm convinced you're going to have a unicorn and rainbows type delivery. Also, the one thing my mother has always said is that you don't care one bit about what you just went through when you see your little person screaming back at you. She also had three fairly easy deliveries, they actually had to grab my dad who was filling out paperwork to come because I was coming so quick. And that was her first pregnancy, so like I said, unicorns, rainbows, and a wee little man!!!
Orgasmic birth lady: Good for you. If you leave it at your super-awesome "I creamed myself while pushing out an infant" story, that is great. But it strikes me that you are among those that tell women everywhere they TOO can have an orgasmic birth if only they give up on "pre-conceived medical notions of women's bodies" bullshit and embrace their womyn selves. Fuck that.
Breast-feeding mom: It would be equally weird if your kid were still sucking on a pacifier at 6 as well. Also, if your child is eating like a normal American boy his age, you are just pumping him full of extra calories. He has gotten all the antibodies he will get from you between 9 and 18 months. You need to find a new way to bond with your son. Play basketball with him. Or dress up. Or action figures.Draw together. These will benefit his social development.
@Miss Smith Drank Your Vodka: well, I was breast fed until i was two years old (I don't remember saying it, but my dad told me i would say "other breast please")
ANYWAY_ I'm 24 now. I'm a pretty healthy normal adult. So is my sister (who was also breast fed until 2). one notable effect: we are both really tall. My sister is taller (she's six feet) than both our parents (who were both powder-formula fed).
@Scout: I have actually heard that goat's milk is excellent for babies! Particularly ones with digestive issues. Excellent climbing isn't a bad side effect either!
@Omitofo: Two is a reasonable age though. I wouldn't bat an eyelash at a woman breast-feeding a child under the age of three. You know, in that age range where diapers may or may not be present and you are considered a toddler, not a child.
She'd rather have the kid suck on her breasts than on a plastic soother? Um, grade school is also too old for a soother. This lady obviously doesn't want to have her kid grow up so she has to go back to having her own life rather than being super mommy. God help him when he brings his first date home to meet dear old mom.
@Elizabooth: I agree. A six year old should know how to soothe himself. Is this kid going to be calling mommy crying when the boss gets mad at him when he's 45? Or is she going to be one of those mothers who calls her child's college professor complaining about an unfair grade? Unfortunately it seems the answer will be yes.
@Elizabooth: That's what I found weird about this same topic in another article on another website. At 6 I could read, speak in full sentences, had a sense of self, and loved my mother. I never was breastfed, she couldn't do it. And things like pacifiers and blankies weren't considered normal in my family after like the age of 3. So I find this whole thing rather odd. I don't want to seem cruel, as the boy is a child, but his speaking seems to be more "toddler mode" than early grade school. Let the kid grow up.
@goldenmonkey: I felt this same way when watching the video. He seemed like he was a toddler still- not something I would want for any six year old child in my life.
I was never breastfed and very independent and well spoken at 6. (I was in the second grade) I really do think that continuing to breastfeed after age two or so is very damaging to the child. Weaning happens for a reason!
@Liz11685: He strikes me as very young for a six year old. His ability to communicate is obviously very high, but his speech and word choice are very toddler-like.
And, no, he shouldn't be going to school with a pacifier.
I'm hoping he's potty trained.
And having him on national TV to gratify your need to justify your selfish need to have your son remain a toddler until he is nine is creepy.
If they are old enough to ask for it then they are too old to have it - I think Samantha from Sex and the City said that.
I mean:
A. Doesn't that ravage her breasts? Ouch
B. I think breast milk is good for a childs development but this kid at 6 doesn't seem any smarter than the average 6 year old so there goes that
C. I thought breast milk was supposed to be for babies who cannot chew/digest foods with enough fat content as B. milk to start their development process. Seems that if you can hold a coherent conversation with an interviewer you need to get off the B and start on some "grown up" food.
I guess I was just scarred as a high school freshman when my journalism teacher made us watch a video of a woman breast feeding her 9 year old and I threw up a bit in my mouth.
@bgoodman: My 11 month asks for me to nurse her... She says "Nuss". So she's too old to nurse? Last time I checked my pediatrician recommended nursing for at least one year.
"If they are old enough to ask for it then they are too old to have it" I really hate that statement.
@Athaliah: 11 months... they have like 4 teeth. No, they don't hurt. I can't imagine nursing for 6 years personally, but I will nurse until she is ready to wean. Most kids self wean, unless you force them to stay on the breast. It's actually unusual to see a child want to nurse that long. This is coming from a La Leche League member. She is happy to be with her mom right now and getting her nutrition at the same time, that's the way I look at it.
And that poor kid is liable to have some adjustment problems. He already comes across in that clip as a little different from other 6 year olds. And the teasing he's gonna get... poor guy.

I want to hear from the recipients and see if they advocate it as well.

As for breastfeeding until 6? Whatever. He's happy. She's happy. And I didn't see hubby hiding in the corner quietly fuming so it's all good.
