    Oh geez... here's where I begin having a problem. What exactly does unattractive mean? Is unattractive something given at birth? Or can makeup, grooming, plastic surgery, or any other type of manipulation of the natural state stave off ugly?!? When we talk about unattractiveness, are we talking about things a person can change, or things a person is POWERLESS against?
    Honestly, I'm like 3 Bloody Mary's into the evening and for some reason, this is stuck in my craw. #germainegreer

    Why does sexy always have to come into everything? I don't need to feel sexy 24/7 because *GASP* I am not defined by my sexuality, my sexual appeal to others, or as a sex object!

    Amazing, but true.

    I don't need to feel sexy to do my job well. It frankly never even occurs to me. Being pre-occupied with either feeling sexy, or considered sexy by others, seems like a fun way to develop an objectification complex.

    It should go without saying that I don't feel sex-less, either. But I'd think it would be exhausting to, among all the other things I need to accomplish in a day, managing to be or feel "sexy" the whole time, too. That just seems like pressure I don't need when I have deadlines.

    This is just another version of expecting/requiring women to be thinking about our sexual object status all the time. And frankly, I've got much better things to do. #germainegreer

    @tiredfairy: I rarely feel "sexy", but it's not that I feel "not-sexy". It's that I am not thinking about it. When I am taking notes in class, I hardly care if I am attractive. It doesn't cross my mind, and why should it? That's not what I'm there for.

    I'm down with that. There are situations in which I want to be seen as sexy, and many in which sexiness is irrelevant or even harmful to me, so... why should I push to be unilaterally sexy, anyway? #germainegreer

    @whynotshesaid: It depends on your generation -- The Female Eunuch was a groundbreaking book, especially coming on the heels of the sexual revolution when women were still being defined and confined by a narrow definition of "womanhood." She was brave and coarse and ballsy at a time when "nice" women didn't talk that way. Some of this stuff seems strident and loopy now, maybe, but it was so important in moving the conversation forward. #germainegreer

    First of all, the term "feminine-ist" is really unwieldy -- it sounds like "feminist," pronounced with a stutter. She can't really expect people to drop the word into actual conversation, so why create a new term? It seems like she just wants to be able to say that she's not a feminist and not come off like an asshole even though it's true. She IS an asshole.

    Femi-nan-ism: Belief that women's proper role is that of the grandmother, regardless of age. Alternatively it is the belief that women should be a delicious leavened bread (sp. femin-naan-ism)

    Femi-noon-ism: Followers of Peggy Noonan, belief in the right of women to be complete nutballs. #germainegreer

    I wish it was, like, international law or something to require people to know a bit about history before they post shit like "it's all feminism's fault women are promiscuous and end up drunk in gutters."

    Those same charges have been leveled against women since, oh, forever--certainly since times when treating women like property instead of people was a whole lot more accepted than it is now. In Western thought, to be a woman and to be promiscuous has been (and, to an extent, still is) considered to be pretty much the same thing.

    Right-wing thought and social conservatism is based on the assumption that women can't control themselves because of what they are. It doesn't matter if a woman's in a nunnery, an office, or a bar... She'll always need to be controlled because she can't control herself. #germainegreer

    I caught this show last night and found it very interesting. Portia described the differences between living together and marriage exactly the way, I, as a straight person, perceived it. They are two vastly different states of being.

    I was very happy that they were legally bound, and can receive the same rights and privileges as hetero couples. They seem very much in love, although, truth be told, Ellen seemed to have a lot of therapy-speak mixed in. She seems to have lots more to work on. Portia seemed the more centered of the two, but maybe because she is not in the spotlight as much. That level of fame, esp. connected with the issues surrounding the couple, must be overpowering at times.

    Give me fortune instead if fame any time.

    @Ulookinatmyjunk, JOC: Eh, I think here she was clarifying it for the audience, who may not have so much exposure to gay couples. I've seen a lot of anti-gay propaganda showing gay men referring to their male partners as "my wife" in an attempt to be inflammatory and derogatory, so clearing up what married lesbians call each other is probably helpful to a lot of people. #oprahellenportiaderossi
