Also, to throw in my two cents, those in the media who focus on these issues would be well served to take a look at the back-n-forth FAR legislation on preference for woman-owned businesses while ALSO not being blind to fraudulent contracting. There are a lot of women entrepreneurs, who employ a lot of women in sectors like technology and energy, who are losing business due to both the economic state of affairs as well as fraud by large (predominantly male/white) large corporations.
Not to uh, get on a soapbox or anything. But there are a lot of noteworthy issues that get very little play, since it's easier to make shit up about the elected guy who hasn't had a chance to actually do anything yet.

I'd be seriously fucking pissed if the stimulus plans were changed to accommodate teachers (although I do understand they education reform is in order) and social workers because women really felt they weren't represented enough.
Argh, sorry but this article really pisses me off. Construction workers across the nation being layed off? The biggest 3 auto manufacturers in danger of closing and creating the biggest unemployment rate spike in history? That's ok, there weren't enough women in them!
Shouldn't have read that article, damn.

In a tight job market, I feel like most industries will be looking for the best of the overqualified masses looking for those jobs, and that will mean those who've had the most time and experience in those industries -- and in a male-dominated sector, that might well mean the candidates with the most experience are..men.

At least that's how I see it, but I'm often wrong about economic issues.

And I'm all for more green jobs in engineering. I'm almost done with my engineering degree and want to work in something like alternative energy or another green area.

I really cannot get my head around this logic. We've just endured 8 years of an administration who did not focus, in the least, on these types of government jobs. Now we're bitching about the fact that they are not included in a stimulus plan?
Don't we expect these jobs to be rewarded with more funding and attention now that we have a more liberal, socially conscious administration focusing on domestic issues?
Also, the proportions of women/men in this sector are nothing like the proportions of women/men in the manufacturing sector.

Maybe I'm soft in the head, but isn't the definition of a stimulus plan into an economic sector to boost said sector, to produce more widgets, to lower economies of scale, to reduce marginal costs and increase marginal profit, increase employment, and then increase the rate of return for investors, so creating new capital investment and so on and so on. And is the definition of a STIMULUS also because, maybe, something needs stimulating!? Like a sector that is currently lagging behind, not really producing at its production possibility frontier, meaning idle machinery (or whatever else is used as capital) and low employment.
Hirshman should also look at the cost-benefit of utlity when investing in one sector versus another.
