There is something thrilling about how open the Internet seems - we can meet and comment on the musings of people we've never met in real life, or people we've met once or twice. But we also say more and share more than we ever would have before with these types of acquaintances. For example, I think many of us who are also Facebook users have a "friend" or two (or 20) that we've only ever met once, but that person still gets the same updates and such that our best friends on Facebook do. That person wouldn't know those things about you if it weren't for Facebook. So sure, I can see it being about "loving" the Internet more than the person because without it some of these new interactions wouldn't be occurring. I'm not discounting the possibility of finding real love through online interactions (I know people who have and I think that's great), but I do think that there's a certain appeal in Internet socializing that can't be ignored.

I... flirt by twitter. I use it a lot, and somehow or another a guy from my town found me there, and we send each other cute tweets about every day.

Would I actually meet up with him? Probably not. But it's fun to flirt with him over that interface. Am I really the only one who flirts over twitter?!

I've been forming relationships online since middle school, when my dad first told me about this awesome "internet" thing. For some time, I was content to keep many of those relationships (friendships, flirtations, what have you) on the web, but that changed years ago, and I now WANT to meet someone in person and have a "real" relationship with them if they're interesting enough for me to continue to correspond with them. So, when longtime commentesr on my blog visit my city or vice versa, we make plans to meet up, etc.

Especially with romance, if I meet someone great through the net, I get very frustrated if we send long e-mails back and forth, but don't move it expediently into RL.

I love my computer, it's where my friends live. I certainly had my share of internet-driven romances in my youth (old school AIM FTW!) but they never translated into real relationships. Well, except for my husband, but I blame that on the alcohol.

Romance is getting killed all over the place today. Were separated lovers before the Internet engaging in 'affairs with stationary?' Was that the equivalent of reducing love to ye olde crossword puzzle?

Do people act differently now? Are they enabled to be needier or more aloof? No doubt. But the fault, dear Luddites, is not in our 3G networks but in ourselves.

Ok, so BF Fabulous and I are separated by an ocean for the time being (he's working in Germany) but with the time difference and our busy lives we actually don't get a lot of time to talk, either on the phone or online. We've been texting more often lately, but otherwise we try for our weekend calls and that's about it. But it kind of works for us. An email from him is a nice surprise and our phone calls are much more meaningful.

I could care less about my phone if the BF didn't text me, but I do tend to keep it close for when he does.

Actually, I met my husband online. But that was before the age of online dating, it was a telnet chatroom, a community of sorts. I'm crap at relationships, very shy in person. Online, I had friends - we didn't flirt, though he did with other girls. He was a friend for a year before we even spoke on the phone. I remember I was closer to one other guy actually, that I thought might have become something. When we had our chance to meet, he was too nervous. Life's funny.

I actually respond to slights in the same way I would in real life, I feel bad about them. I've never experienced any big dramas via the web, but even little tiffs (or whatever) that I've experienced have made me really uncomfortable. And when I feel like I have insulted someone or come off badly it will bother me more than it should. And, this is really just Jez-specific, but I don't hang out anywhere else. This is like my video arcade.

@Penny: I obsess over internet tiffs. Like if someone says something that isn't the least bit positive it will bother me for days. I actually deleted a friend's grammar-police comment from my personal blog the other day and now I'm scared to talk to her in case she's mad at me, but the other half of my brain is screaming IT'S MY BLOG I DO WHAT I WANT! Gah, the internets.

@Penny: the BF and I have gotten into really bad arguments online because one person sends an email saying something in a joking "tone" the other person reads it as serious/critical etc...responds in a wtf fashion and then we're off. One tense work-day later and its like, oh you thought I was serious about that?

I think the thing that sucks is that a lot of people fail to understand the nature in which communication has simply changed for a large part of the world forever. My grandmother bitches I never write. My mother bitches I never call. My ex-girl bitched that I never responded to her IM's quickly enough, and if I'm fortunate enough, I'm sure my daughter will bitch about my not letting her have her very own hologram device even though her all of her friends have them. That's just time and technology, people. And my admittedly horrid inability to keep up.
